The Mundane Life (Open)
« on: November 09, 2017, 04:19:10 PM »
When Bobby first go the Beacon he never figured that life would ever get so boring. He didn't know if it was because he was not exhilarated  about reading essays on the lives of generals during the Great War or if it was because he wasn't a crazy lunatic that looked to challenge random people to fights. He figured that he could always make himself for attractive to hyper aggressive meatheads that would like to bash his face in but his past bad experiences with those types convinced him that it was a bad idea. He also hated those kinds of people on principle since they tended to bully those that were weaker than them when they get bored which he knew from personal experience could be a terrible ordeal for person being picked on back home. It was pretty much torture for Bobby when he was younger.

His grandmother however had a different opinion on the whole situation. She just figured that he was over reacting and needed to take the bull by the horns and confront the bully like his late grandfather would have done. Her scheme would have gotten him beaten into hamburger if his semblance hadn't activated. Her overbearing personality and her tendency to use his dead granddad as a measuring stick is usually why he avoided calling home. He loved his grandma very much but it can be a bit much to be compared to a supposed 7'0'' hulk of a man who was god's greatest gift to humanity. His grandfather had died before he was born so he didn't get an impression of him for himself and his father seemed content in letting his grandmother drone on and on instead of giving his two cents about the man that raised him.

So instead of going through a call of his grandmother dominating the conversation while his parents sit quietly or fighting some hyped up knucklehead who's shoe size was larger than his IQ he decided to chill in the library and surf the web on one of the computers until he found something that pique his interest. He knew he could probably walk around somewhere in the city of Vale but he wasn't that familiar with the city since he was raised in a small village.

Ah, the library... here, where the hustle of the school day met the still solitude of meditation and reading, where hushed silence in one wing mingled with softly echoing laughter from another, in this place of tomes and tapestries... here, Rory could lose himself, if ever so briefly, and almost forget his worries.

Almost.

A pair of inexpensive headphones rested around his neck, letting soothing piano music reach his ears whilst keeping him aware of what was around him -- which could be important here. You never knew when someone was going to go racing through the stacks in a rush, start a rubber band war, or play a round of "pin the 'kick me' sign on the nerd"... all of which he'd experienced at least once in his first few weeks, even more as the months wore on. Part of being a Huntsman in training was being ready at all times; the library, sanctum of knowledge though it was, could be no exception. Still, this place was better than most, and today he was in particular need of it.

The hard, simple truth was that his shields weren't holding up to damage as well as they should. Even with regular maintenance there were issues of stress-wear and unexpected mechanical failures that put him ill at ease. Again, to be a Huntsman was to be ready, and that included one's weapon. Gathering up another book on metallurgy -- the third, in addition to one sizable text on advanced mechanical engineering for weapons and armor -- the burgundy shield fighter made his way over to the reading tables, passing close enough for Bobby to note the titles as he did so.

Today is a good day.

Not more so than any other day, to be fair. The Sun was meeehhhhh - rain was pouring down every now and then. Autumn's chill had started to invade the Beacon grounds. Grimm still existed. So did classes. A normal day if there ever was such a thing at a Huntsman Academy.

No, what made this day good is Anna's current occupation. Rolled into a deceptively small ball of clothes and hair, she'd successfully nabbed one of the large readers stationed near the entrance and was using it to consume literature, with and without drawings, at an alarming rate. She'd gone to her usual spot - one of the luxuriously comfy seats located near one of the computer clusters. Not only was this one located in what was arguably the quietest part of the library, it was also the only one that escaped the accursed fate of every other cluster, where students in need of R&R surreptitiously coerced the devices into entertainment centers. Screams of anger, rage, surprise or even laughter weren't uncommon around these game-toting maniacs.

But thankfully, this wasn't anywhere close to her. She could read in peace and utter bliss, devouring virtual page after virtual page with a voraciousness that could've made an Ursa second guess itself.

As Bobby surfed the web he could hear the laughter of others playing some sort of game. He casually looked at what they were playing hoping that they would let him play but he realized that it was that ninja fighting game that was only for 2 players and they already had two players. He wasn't very good at that game so it wasn't worth it to create an awkward interaction by having to introduce himself to two boys engaged in virtual ninja warfare.

However as he was looking at the two boys virtual ninjas fighting to the death he noticed that one boy walking by him was carrying a few books with him. He could see that all of the books were about weaponry. His dad's background as a blacksmith and his training at Signal had given him a strong amount of interest and knowledge about weaponry for a student. As he glanced at the titles that the boy was carrying he saw something that caught his attention. "My dad has some of those books at home." Bobby inadvertently said out loud not realizing that other people might be able to hear him.

"My dad has some of those books at home."

It took Rory a second to process that the comment was directed, more or less, at him -- or at least, the person who'd spoken it seemed to be doing so in his direction. He paused his steps and turned to see that, indeed, an olive-skinned student was looking at the stack in his hands. A brief moment of awkwardness passed, in which it became clear that the comment hadn't necessarily been meant to start anything one way or another; Rory briefly considered just shrugging it off and moving on, but something in the back of his mind prodded at him, suggesting he follow this a bit further.

"Really? I'm having a bit of trouble with them, actually." Which was true. This wasn't the first time Rory had dug into these particular tomes, but the third or fourth. Understanding the information wasn't so much the difficulty as applying it, so he'd decided to dig through again hoping for inspiration or to at least refresh himself on the details. He took a few steps back in Bobby's direction. "Don't suppose I could bother you for any insights you've got?"

It seemed that his thoughtless proclamation reached the ears of the boy holding the books. At first things were a little awkward between them it looked like both of them were processing what had just happened. Bobby figured that the boy would just look at him like a weirdo and leave him be. After all how many people who just start up a conversation about books with a random....

"Really? I'm having a bit of trouble with them, actually. Don't suppose I could bother you for any insights you've got?"

Well that was a surprise. He spent a few moments processing what was going on as the boy approached him. He then stood up so he could be at eye-level with the stranger. "My dad's a blacksmith so he has all kinds of books on weaponry and metalwork." Bobby's dad practically had a little library on the stuff in his study back home. When he was tired of dealing his mother's domineering personality he would quietly go there when she wasn't looking and just read him. "I'm nowhere near as good as my dad but I'll try to see if I can help you."

Rory blinked in disbelief, refusing for a moment to believe he could be this lucky. His dad was a blacksmith -- and one with a background in weapon-crafting? That was fortunate almost to the point of beggaring belief. There was no way he could let a chance like this slip by.

"That's... actually exactly what I need, honestly." Gently placing the books down on a nearby desk, the shield brawler pointed to his vambraces. "I'm having trouble with these -- they're collapsible shields made from small overlapping steel plates supported by micro-hydraulics, but lately the components have been breaking down and wearing out a lot faster than they should. I'm honestly on something of a tight budget for replacement parts, but if you can figure anything out that'll help I'll be glad to make it up to you."

Anna perked her head up a bit. This was the... well, it wasn't the first time one of the nearby discussions was mentioning weapons. The tone didn't seem like one of those gamers, either. Curious, she sat on her knees and turned towards the source of the chatter, pulsing her semblance's second stage.

Sure enough, the two boys seemed to be discussing something unrelated to video games, judging by the looks on their faces and the books carried by the one clad in red. She closed the pad's protective case and turned around completely, setting her arms on top of the chair's back and her head on top of those, the electronic device resting between her thighs and the backrest. While she might've seemed to be staring, the fact that her eyes were closed and her hair was hiding her features could've confused some.

She brought her attention to the words being ushered back and forth, seeking to understand the dilemma at play here. After doing this for a brief moment or two, she got up to speed with the others. She wasn't blacksmith's son-level in metallurgy, but was rather confident in her abilities to troubleshoot tech and create simple enough mechanisms.

...Now the only thing left was to get past her own shyness. Ugh.

Bobby looked at the boy's vambraces as the boy explained what was going on with them. He was impressed at what the kid had done with his shields although he was curious as to where his actual weapon(s) were. He didn't see it/them on his person so he assumed he left any offensive weaponry in his dorm room which was extremely risky. There was always the risk of running into the bored ogre that wanted nothing more than to bash your face in at the wrong place at the wrong time.

"I never seen shields that intricate before. The huntsmen and huntresses that travel around my small town usually have basic shields if they have any at all. Though I do sympathize with the lack of funds part. We aren't as well off as the main city and the only people we get from the outside is the occasional person form Vacuo which isn't exactly rolling in lien." He said before examining the vambraces on the kid's arms.

"Can you describe exactly how they are breaking down? Are they..." Bobby said before he noticed something weird from the corner of his eyes. A girl sitting on one of the chairs was moving around rather strangely. She ended up turning her entire body towards them and turning her face towards them. However he couldn't say that she was staring at them even though her face was facing towards them since her eyes seemed to be closed. Is she doing some sort of weird meditation thing

"I never seen shields that intricate before."

Rory allowed himself a slight smile at the compliment, whether it was intended or not; even though they weren't weapons per say, the shield were his and, for all their faults, he'd put in plenty of work on them.

"Can you describe exactly how they are breaking down? Are they..." As Bobby's voice trailed off and his gaze shifted Rory followed his eyes to see what the other student was looking at, eyes falling on Anna. Had he seen this girl before somewhere, maybe in one of his classes? She did seem vaguely familiar, though for the life of him Rory couldn't place her. It wasn't uncommon for students to come to the library for peace and quiet, meditation included, so after a moment's thought Rory shrugged it off. She wasn't really bothering anyone, after all -- best to let her be.

"Here, let me show you." Activating the responsive pressure triggers on his right-hand vambrace with a well-practiced snap of the wrist, Rory's "weapon" whirred to life and a swift-moving cascade of interlocking plates seemed to unfold, one from behind another, almost like a paper fan opening. In the process some seemed to get stuck, or not quite deploy in the right spot, or emerged with clearly visible scrape marks from the small hydraulic arms or other plates. There were also signs of residual combat damage here and there, although the most badly-hit plates had seemingly been swapped out for new ones. When the entire kite shield fully unfolded after a few seconds Rory carefully slid his arm loose and offered it to Bobby for inspection. "It seems mostly to be an endurance issue, best I can tell. Even with my Aura going through it, it just doesn't quite seem to be holding up under regular use. The other one's much the same, even though I use it less... I'm worried it might be down to a flaw in the design or the parts I'm using, but I just can't seem to go more than a week without a plate or support threatening to buckle. It's a real headache, honestly..."

He added, suddenly apologetic. "I don't mean to be a burden -- even just your opinion would be fine, honestly."

Ooooh, that was pretty. Failing, if the grind marks were anything to judge by, but really pretty. As for the problem... the instances of plates getting stuck, misdeploying or scraping against the varied mechanisms seemed to indicate, at least from her point of view, that the mobile parts - joints, pistons, pivots - were at fault here. Add to that the explanation he gave, the weakest parts were probably too weak compared to the rest of the Aura-filled construct and maybe just couldn't hold on very long? She'd probably be able to zero in on the exact cause if using her semblance at max power, but that was for emergency or last-resort situations.

Alright. Regardless, she still needed to do this. After turning off her semblance, she swiftly turned the right way around in her chair, picking up the tablet as she did so, before getting up and circumventing the piece of furniture she'd just taken off of, heading right for the chatting duo. Her step rapidly slowed down, though, coming to a shy crawl a few meters away. In her usual (for strangers) small, meek voice, she asked "C-can I help t-too?"

The only comfort to be had was that her face was pointed at the ground, which would help to hide it via positioning as well as the presence of a wall of hair falling in front of it.

Bobby saw the shield open up he quickly noticed that some parts had a harder time opening up than other. Some of the plates had scratch marks on them while others seemed to be newer than the others indicating that the kid had replaced some. He took the shield from the other boy and started inspecting it. You mentioned the parts that you used, I was just wondering how exactly you came across the parts for this shield? Did you get them from a junior academy or did you get them from somewhere else? Usually places like Signal and Sanctum have decent enough materials to build...

"C-can I help t-too?"

Bobby turned to the weird girl from before who had walked up to them while he was talking without him noticing. The first thing he noticed that she was slightly taller than him which immediately conjured up images of his grandmother mocking him for being shorter than a girl. He then noticed that he couldn't see her face at all as it was pointed down and not in a "I'm taller than you so I have to look down on you" kind of way but in a "I'm probably looking at something on the floor" kind of way. All he could see was a wall of brown hair covering her face.

He then turned to the other boy for an answer since it was his weapon they were discussing and he figured it would be rude if he were to give a stranger's weapon to someone without their approval.

"C-can I help t-too?"

The unfamiliar voice drew his attention from the conversation just as it did Bobby; there was the tall, slender girl whom he'd assumed to have been meditating, looking down at the ground as she meekly spoke. He was surprised at the offer -- leaning hard towards introversion himself he immediately picked up on and understood her hesitancy, and found he didn't really have it in him to say 'no'. Both of these people were total strangers to him... and yet they were both willing to assist with a problem that wasn't theirs, just because they could.

It was... humbling.

He looked to Bobby, who was looking his way for confirmation, and gave a brief nod. "Sure, if you want. 'Two heads are better than one', and all that." He paused, thinking, then scoffed at himself.

"Here I am asking for help, and I haven't even properly introduced myself yet. Sorry for that. I'm Rory Vogel, first year class, team VCVS." He looked between Bobby and Anna. "Thank you both for assisting -- it really is a huge help."

"As to the parts, I mostly use standard stock from the mechanical surplus shops downtown. I know they're not top grade, but I've run the numbers for mechanical stresses and it seems like they're breaking down faster than advertised. I never really had the opportunity to attend Signal or anything, Beacon's been my first taste of combat school." Bobby's question certainly got him wondering if his own inexperience with weaponcraft was at fault here -- certainly possible, given the circumstances.

Oooooh good, good. She managed to not be turned down. Very good.

A smile appearing on Anna's face, she lifted her head up a bit before softly setting herself down on her knees, sitting on her feet. She put the cased tablet in front of herself, to keep an eye on it. She was right about to ask a question herself when the student plagued by mechanical malfunctions presented himself.

Oh. Welp, not that he did, she needed to do so as well. She was reeeaaally banking on the fact that she'd eventually wind up being more comfortable, but until then talking about something other than the device was a struggle. "...A-Anna Fall, f-first year, ASTC. Y-You're welcome." UGH.

Afterwards, though, she went back to listening mode, the tension within her diminishing slightly as she did so. Say what you may, she was a fantastic listener. So, Rory was getting parts from surplus stores and such. Pretty reasonable, since you usually had good prices and still retained a decent quality. And oooh, wow, he hadn't even attended a combat school? Damn, the boy must've been pretty good, huh. Rare were those without prior formation. She was itching to ask another question, but thought it better to let the other member of the triad speak first. Being economical with words and such would be good, after all, seeing how she was shy. Again, ugh.

Gavin walked into the library, somewhat deflated looking, the weather hadn't been terribly sunny lately, meaning he wasn't at peak performance for the combat practical he'd just lost. Not only that, but he'd been doing alright until his weapon ran out of dust... which only happened because he forgot to reload it in the morning. Overall, it felt like a pretty arbitrary defeat.

At least he could come here and play some games to take his mind off of it. While he'd normally prefer to play outside, he was hoping to find someone to compete with, so he could try and win something today.

However, as he walked toward the computers, he heard a girl's voice. "..A-Anna Fall, f-first year, ASTC. Y-You're welcome." temporarily intrigued, he walked a little further, passing the busier, more preferable computer banks to see what was going on.

Sure enough, something interesting was there, three students crowded around one of the computers. two boys of equal height stood up, and one girl sat on the floor, all of them looking not at the computer, but the shield in the brown haired boy's hands.

Burning with the desire to find out what was so special about this shield, Gavin walked up close (perhaps too close.) to the three and with a newly found cheer exclaimed.

"Oh? What's going on over here?"
