Helena almost flinched when the very easily recognizable nurse's voice asked a question. Well then, that was definitely surprising. She kept her attention focused forwards, though. Only thing she found somewhat worthy of note is the 'ties to the LifeWeave company'. She didn't really know what those ties were or what the company was, but eh, it was good trivia anyway.

Then the class got properly started, lights dimming and projector ever-so-slightly whirring to life. She couldn't help but lean a bit closer to her notebook, preparing to write whatever would happen, if necessary. However, it started with a disclaimer. She'd seen some pretty rough stuff go by in the ER once or twice while helping out, so she paid it little to no mind. The appearance of the admittedly somewhat disturbing image produced no effect on her, either. She was also far too zoned in to notice the laughter coming from the back of the class, as well as the question that followed suit. She did, however, hear and understand the teacher's.

Hmmm. So basically an arrow, huh? Well, first was checking how the victim was doing, right? Heartbeat, breathing, abnormal pains away from the harmed zone, state of consciousness, general lucidity, unusual weakness, the like. If something else's wrong, deal with that first. If, on the contrary, it's as fine and dandy as can be with a crossbow bolt in your leg, take care of it. First in this case, since the bleeding seemed to have stopped, was to check exactly what part of the leg had been hit. Second was to clean the wound and surrounding area as best as possible. Third, make sure to not tamper with the bolt too much, as the bleeding might start again. Removing the arrow bolt would need surgery, since there was no telling what manner of barbs the thing had or how much damage it had caused. The only thing she could somewhat see is cut the shaft so that it doesn't come out of the leg as far, which'd mostly just make it easier to deal with. Wouldn't get in the way as much and all. After all this is said and done, use a crutch, support the victim or put on a stretcher, getting to the closest emergency-capable clinic or hospital ASAP.

After finishing her train of reasoning, Helena focused on Doctor Sophos again, slowly moving her right hand up to answer.

Hearing a familiar voice Diana spun around to look up the stands, they had only met briefly before but the fact that Sophea was here filled her with excitement. She had long wanted to get a familiar with the medical staff of Beacon, and here were the two major players. Snapping back to reality she scribbled "LifeWeave" as something to look into. Although typically one to remain quiet in most classes she desperately wanted to seem knowledgeable to both Sophea and Budonoki, so when the picture came up she raised her hand whilst scribbling some notes to organize her thoughts.
  • Fight time: Patient probably went without treatment for a fair amount of time, quick inspection of respiration and circulation are more important than the bolt (distal pulse!).
  • Dried blood: Patient was either lucky or has regained enough aura to prevent severe blood loss, any blood loss would be manageable while immobilising the impalement
  • Immobilise: Immobilise the impalement, using a donut (folded triang) / two unrolled bandages and wrap, avoid pressure on bolt (never remove it)

"Um sir. How is a student that passes out going to be able to speak up?"

Raising an eyebrow, the good doctor glanced briefly at the class roster. "Ah, yes -- mister Smoke. Thank you; perhaps that wasn't the best choice of words. Let me clarify: if anyone starts to feel faint or unsteady, they shouldn't wait to say so and may be step out for a minute or simply rest their head on the desk as their need may be. I do hope that addresses your concern." He would let the laughter slide; no point in coming off as harsh or humorless. It was, after all, only day one of the semester.

Waiting a few minutes to let the students organize their thoughts, Budonoki saw two hands go up: Helena Chlophyll and Diana Farran, a pair of very promising young ladies whom the doctor recognized from his short-list of students in the class with a notable medical studies background. It was no surprise they would be the ones quickest and keenest to answer, he supposed. From what he'd read in their student files, it wouldn't surprise him if these two could teach this class.

"Miss Chlophyll, miss Farran, go ahead. Your first impressions, if you please." He gestured between the two of them, indicating they could answer in whichever order they wished.

Having arrived a little bit late, Blair tried to sneak into class. She almost made it to her seat without being noticed, she tripped over a stair and her books fell, making a large ruckus before she stood back up and quickly sat down in her seat. Her cheeks were bright red and she slid down in her seat, trying not to be seen.

Nodding back at Sandy, Rackley continued to take notes, trying hard to be inconspicuous as Sandy drew the attention of both the professor as well as the students there. Just keep your head down and avoid eye contact... he thought, idly drawing a few pictures of medical tools in his notebook so that he could look busy.

Thankfully, the attention seemed to turn away from Sandy as another student tried to sneak into the classroom, but failed in her attempt. Looking up from his drawings as the girl quickly grabbed her material and sat down, Rackley felt a moment of sympathy towards her as he would feel completely embarrassed around everyone else. Moving his eyes away from her so that she wouldn't feel someone's weight on her, he continued his drawings, all the while intrigued to hear more in the class.

Initially a bit surprised to be answering as a duo, Diana gave a glance towards Helena who seemed to signal that Diana should go first. Briefly wondering how to answer fairly she figured that she could cover the analysis, whilst Helena could cover treatment. Hoping that was fair she spoke up.

"Well to answer the main point of your question, you leave the crossbow bolt in the wound. Pulling it out will do more harm than good." She paused for a second unsure if that was all he wanted, however wanting to make a good first impression she pushed onward "We don't have a lot of information but it is enough to speculate a bit on. The blood in the image has dried and there seems to be little bleeding from the wound, this tells us that the fight probably lasted a while and that they may have recovered enough aura to start closing his wound. As such his general condition, his consciousness, breathing, heart rate, are the priority. I would also check the pulse distal to the wound. If the bolt is stuck in the bone it could be sturdy enough to not bleed but still cut off blood supply, if so the puls past the wound would be weak." Her last suggestion was admittedly a bit out there but it did at least demonstrate some knowledge of anatomy.

"Um, Helena do you want to cover treatment?" There was a bit of worry in her voice, as she was unsure if she had talked too much, or if Helena was better at diagnosing than treatment.

Helena took an instant to realize that Diana had just talked to her, blinking a few times to get out of listening mode. "Yeah, sure. My pleasure." She collected her thoughts on the matter once again before starting.

"First aid treatment would start by gently cleaning and sanitizing the wound as much as possible, then wrapping the area immediately around the bolt to both protect said wound and immobilize the foreign body to the most of what can be managed. Movement would reopen the wound or possibly inflict further internal damage. If a tool, or weapon, is nearby that can cleanly cut the shaft without disturbing the injury too much, it should be used so as it won't be in the way nearly as much. Simple wooden shafts could potentially be snapped, provided the part attached to the head remains stable enough. Then you either make a crutch, lend a shoulder to the victim or put them on a stretcher before bringing them to the nearest surgery-capable location for removal of the head ASAP."

Whew. Not that she was shy or anything but being the focus point of the entire class sure brought a bit of nervousness along, didn't it. Hopefully she didn't miss anything - the ER of the hospital she helped in never really had to deal with bolt or arrow injuries.

...Wait. It felt like she'd missed something when she was concentrating on her answer... She couldn't remember the surrounding sounds during that time, but she had the sensation that something very noticeable had happened. Damn. At least it wasn't in the center of her field of view, so it probably hadn't been Doctor Sophos.

Sophea nodded, satisfied with both their answers, penned her notebook. [Helena and Diana are both competent in first aid, as to be expected.] She hesitated, tapping the blunt end against her notebook somewhat audibly. She took note of their apparent disregard for their fellow classmate who tripped while walking up the stairs.

She packed up what little belongings she had and stood up, clasping her hands together apologetically toward Dr. Sophos. Sophea walked to where Blair had sat with discreet and took a seat beside her. She opened her notebook to a fresh page. [Are you OK?]

Sandy, Having made his smart-arse remark turned to look at the material damn. That is a pretty grim looking injury. I think I know what to do but it's a bit late now. Sandy was then distracted from the class by the sound of the door opening and a faunas girl trying to sneak in. "Damn that's never fun."[/b] Then she fell down and spilled her stuff everywhere. Almost immediately Sandy was on his feet and on his way down to help her at the very least collect her spilled belongings. "Oh crap. Are you alright?"

Just before the two young women could give their answers, a late entry into the class made herself known with a stumble in the darkened classroom. Seeing the student scramble to get their fallen books together Budonoki briefly considered saying something, but thought against it. It seemed that the young lady was more at risk of embarrassment than pain -- he made a mental note to ask after class, just to be sure, and was relieved when he noticed Sophea move to check on the student's well being.

Diana and Helena's assessment of the situation was just as he'd expected -- thorough, thoughtful, and entirely professional. It wasn't hard to imagine that after graduation they would both be valued assets wherever they chose to apply their knowledge and talents. "Excellent answers, both of you! I believe you hit all the key points. It's important to remember that, in the heat of the moment, it may seem like removing a lodged object is the right step -- this, however, can lead to fragments being left in the body and greatly accelerated bleeding of the wound. Everyone in class would do well to remember this."

He toggled the projector to display the next image. It appeared to be a still capture from a video, this time showing a Huntress face-on. She was clutching her stomach and seemed ghastly pale and unsteady, as though she were about to fall over. "This next scenario is less graphic, but sadly much more common. You and your teammates have just ended a narrowly successful battle against Grimm and are seeing to each others' wounds. No one appears to be hurt too badly, but this young lady seems distinctly unwell. Her skin is cool and clammy, her pupils enlarged, and her breathing erratic. She doesn't show signs of any serious battle wounds, but tells you she feels dizzy and nauseous."

"What might you look for to find out what's wrong?"

With everyone looking at her, she blushed harder before looking away. However, after hearing others asking if she was alright, she nodded and smiled. "Yes. I am. Thank you for caring though." She smiled and looked toward Sandy. She smiled at him then noticed an empty seat next to him. "Do you mind if I move next to you? I kinda need your notes."

"ok. Good to hear you're ok. huh? Sure, why not. my notes aren't that great though, You'll likely notice a distinct drop in quality at some point." As he made the joke about quality dropping he turned and winked at Rackley if he could catch his teammate's eye before starting the path back up to his seat, as he did he noticed the new scenario on the board and decided he may aswell try to answer. Time to make mum and dad proud. Or embarrass them about how little of their teachings actually stuck, one of the two. With that he stopped on the stairs back to his desk and raised his hand lazily.

Taking note of the response the professor gave, Rackley quickly wrote down the important parts of the lecture so he'll remember it later, but also for Sandy. Speaking of him, Rackley turned and looked over to where Sandy was helping the other student with her things. Catching him winking in his direction, Rackley simply sighed with resignation. Definitely need to make sure to take good notes for the both of us he thought, smiling slightly. Despite his tendency to have a hard time getting along with other people, Sandy and the others on his team made him feel more at ease and not nearly as the awkward, quiet guy he so often came off as.

Noticing that the girl Sandy had helped came and sat next to him, Rackley leaned forward and gave a smile and wave at her, hoping he didn't look awkward in the process. Noticing Sandy raising his hand to answer the questions, Rackley simply turned his attention back on the board and continued to take notes, doing his not to draw the attention of those around, especially the professor.

Diana allowed herself a momentary sense of pride for answering the question well, however it didn't take long for her neurotic mind to point out how easy it had been. Her internal beratement was however interrupted by the sound of Blair's fall. Along with the rest of the class she looked over, her concern was alleviated from seeing Sophea heading over to her.

The new case presented by the doctor was a pretty simple one, and having just answered the last question Diana was perfectly happy to sink into her typical quiet mode for lectures, not wanting to seem lazy she did write down some basic notes on the symptoms.

Sophea did feel a tad jaded having been completely ignored. Blair appeared to be okay though so Sophea returned her attention to the class. Sophos had put up a new slide, an image of a Huntress-in-Training, and was awaiting volunteers. When he listed of the exact symptoms, Sophea was quick to have an answer to her condition. But, Sophos seemed to be looking for more.

Sophea scanned the room, her main focus being Diana and Helena. Diana resigned herself to writing notes, but Sophea was sure that she had at least an inkling of what was going on. She crossed her arms and waited for someone else to play ball.
