"Good a plan as any." Cordell gave him a grin that was caught somewhere between a nervous "here's hoping we get through this" and a giddy, almost greedy "let's murder some monsters". As if to emphasize her agreement she drew both her pistols, spun them on their trigger-guards, and held them ready with her arms crossed over her chest.

"Breachers confirmed, inbound on the cargo ship's starboard side." Overhead, the Red Corsair withdrew its drop line and turned to face the approaching beasts. Just at the edge of the horizon, if one looked closely, could be seen a disturbance... a churning of the waves and a hint of inky blackness just beneath. The pirate took a deep, steadying breath as she tried to judge the scale of the threat. At this distance it was impossible, truly, but the pit of her stomach said it was more than her ship could pick off on its own. Where had this many even come from? A pod of four, five, or as many as ten wasn't unheard of... but as it drew closer and closer it became clear that this... this was a swarm.

"Opening fire."

The air filled with the electric crackle of energy weapons discharging. The Red Corsair's burst cannons let loose, bolts of blazing azure light searing the sea and sky as they lanced out with the pace of machine gun fire at the onrushing Grimm. A plume of black vapor rose, mingled with the steam of vaporized ocean water -- the first kills of the engagement. The swarm seemed stunned at first, then began to fragment and scatter -- for the briefest of moments Cordell entertained the notion that the opening volley would scare them off, but then the truth became clear. Tendrils of disturbed water veered left and right from the main swarm, breaking off and coming at indirect angles while yet others in stayed the course and accelerated forwards. It wasn't hard to imagine that even more of the creatures had dove down to avoid the surface weapons, which would be a problem in due time.

"Del, if any come at th' ship's port, fore, or aft --"

"Motion tracking indicates exactly that, captain."

"...Well shite. All angles, that's just great."

Moments later a faint thud could be felt echoing through the ship, followed by a succession of more impacts. "They're rammin' th' hull. Once they figure out they can't break through they'll start t' climb, an' then things get dicey."

It played out exactly so -- the muted impacts increased in pace and intensity over the course of a minute or two before abating altogether, ushering in an eerie silence. The surviving Grimm were circling now, too close or too deep for the Red Corsair's guns to pick them off. Anxious seconds ticked by... and then a new sound, not unlike someone throwing a sopping-wet towel against a concrete wall. Splat... splat... splat...

Splat splat splat. Splat splat splat.

Splatsplatsplatsplatsplatsplatsplatsplatsplatsplatsplatsplatsplatsplatsplatsplatsplat--!

With a gurgling roar, the head of the first climbing Breacher crested over the deck's edge, only to be silenced as a tethered harpoon from the airship overhead pierced its skull, reeled the creature's body, up and flung it away. It wasn't alone, though -- two more were soon pulling themselves up into sight, with more sure to follow. The fight was on.

Naturally, Michael was a bit apprehensive about working with the person who tried to both steal his cargo and shoot him, but that feeling would be quelled by the sight of the mass of breachers churning the water. Quickly flipping open his grenade launcher from his shield, he struggled to get the right combination of grenades in order.

"At what point do we pull out the desperation maneuvers?" he asked sincerely, his shield and gauntlet extended and ready to fire. Taking a bit of his strategy from earlier, he kept his right side to the wall. As much as he hated the idea of turning his back on this woman, he tried to hold his own half of the ship as the breachers climbed over and began to swarm. A quick blast of ice dust would hopefully keep them from charging in too quickly. He layered his half of the ship, praying that the crazy woman would have a good plan to deal with them.

When do we get desperate? A half dozen answers flashed through Cordell's mind at that question, none of which were pleasant. When an Alpha shows up. When more Grimm are drawn into the mix. When they both start running low on ammo. When the Red Corsair takes a hit and goes down. When the Cogs can't fix the ship's power woes. When the red on her coat isn't just dye. And that was just for a start. "Trust me, ye'll know. Question fer' a question: am I too f***ing sober for this?" She fired off a volley of shots at the three nearest Grimm, knocking off one still climbing aboard and causing two others to shriek in pain. Reflexively she ducked as a pair of spikes came zipping towards her, embedding into the wall not far behind. "Answer: yer bloody damn right I am."

Stand fast and hold would only work for so long -- they badly needed a strategy. Michael's ice dust was doing a decent job of keeping the creatures occupied thusfar, sending the Breachers who tried to venture across it sliding and flailing with the rocking of the boat, unable to direct themselves towards the duo effectively. Still, delaying tactics were only viable so long as they led to something else. Cordell's pistols had a decent kick and would doubtless kill quite a few Grimm, but she'd run out of ammo eventually and didn't much favor her odds of sustained combat with just a mag-grapple cutlass. She grit her teeth. "Del, I need tactical suggestions an' right quick."

"One moment captain." The airship's harpoon lanced out once more, skewering a hapless Breacher as it floundered on Michael's ice patch. There was a pause, during which Cordell could almost feel her heart rate go up. "Assessment: until the deployed repair units can restore the cargo ship's defense weapons to working order, your best survival strategy is to lead the enemy into a bottleneck. The entrance to the bridge will serve for this purpose. However, there is a high probability that, absent yourself and Mr. Vaktar to defend the top deck, the Grimm will eventually begin tearing at the deck plating in an effort to get to the crew inside."

Cordell ducked and fired another volley, blasting away the tail of an approaching Breacher is a splatter of ephemeral black viscera. "AND? What's th' next option?!"

"Aside from abandoning the ship--"

A bladed flipper came lashing her way from the left; Cordell ducked, rolled aside, and came up in a crouch and a two-gun counter-offer. "Not in the cards Del!"

"--I calculate your second greatest odds of success if you seal the entrance to the bridge and assume higher ground, such as the crane platform on the mid deck. This, however, will leave you very much surrounded, and I cannot provide fire support without a moderate risk of damage to the cargo ship."

"Aside from that, I see no viable combat options captain."

Turning her guns on yet another aquatic Grimm, Cordell let loose a volley of rapid shots and left the creature a corpse. "Oi, Vaktar! Your ship, your call. Bottleneck or higher ground? Choose fast mate!"

Michael was well on his way toward the desperation maneuvers as they fought. You see, big grimm are a bit easier for Michael to take care of. Ice everything that moves, fire everything that doesn't. It makes for a pretty sound strategy. Not for the little bastards. Michael tried to fend them off with ice, but that could only work for so long. A fair number of them froze to the deck, rendering them out of the fight. But, for every one that was incapacitated, two more were there making Michael's life a living hell.

"We are going high ground! These bastards aren't getting my crew!" he shouted at the captain. He started moving toward the base of the crane dock, freezing and kicking anything that he could in the process.

Michael, seeing the need to prepare for plan d, activated every grenade in his launcher and fired them at the heaviest parts of the swarm. With any luck, it would buy the both of them some time to get to the appropriate position.

Somehow, she knew he was going to go that route -- what Cordell didn't know, and didn't see coming, was when Michael pulled out the heavy weaponry. Those grenades did a fair bit of damage, and it seemed that the loud concussive blasts were enough to momentarily confuse and disorient the hungry swarm. This, then, was a moment to be seized upon.

Unloading the last few rounds in her guns in rapid succession, she deftly flipped the release switch for the ammo magazines on both and then flung her weapons skyward. No point in doing this on the ground where she'd be a target; as the pirate leapt up and jump-kicked off the tall walls of the ship's bridge she reached into her longcoat and drew out fresh ammo mags, one marked C-04 and a second labeled FE-02. With the fight going how it was there was no sense in holding back. It was a bit of a trick to reload in mid-air, sure, but it was a trick she'd practiced plenty of times -- one doesn't always have the luxury to take cover and swap cartridges in a heated fight, after all. With some deft handiwork Cordell slotted her new munitions in, grabbed firm hold of the pistol grips... and took aim with Tide at the doorway Michael had emerged from. Two shots rang out in succession, and as the C-04 rounds hit they formed a thick layer of Dust-formed ice that had covered the entrance completely by the time she hit the ground. That was 'seal the entrance' taken care of... now all that remained was 'fend off the bloodthirsty horde.

Following her mountain of a companion as he pushed through the Grimm swarm, Cordell swapped out Time for her cutlass -- best to save the heavy firepower for just the right moment, especially considering what a stray shot could do to the deck. "Big guns on ye there." She couldn't help but remark, taking a slash at a Breacher that tried to come in behind them at an angle. "How much more thunder y' got in that thing?"

Michael his his fist against his thigh, a panel popping out to reveal two sets of grenades. "Not much. Wasn't really planning on being boarded today." he said, pulling himself on top of the crane base. It was a real struggle. The shield keeps your arm in and the armor is damn heavy. He rolled onto the platform, icing the side of it to keep the swarm from getting to him immediately. "You know how I was talking about desperation maneuvers earlier?I think it's a good time to try some of those out!"

He kicked one of the few that managed to reach the platform off and fumbled with the grenade clips. "Buy me some time! And duck when I say so!" he shouted as he loaded up the launcher. There was some saying about insanity and genius that would apply here, but it is hard to get the specifics right when you are being swarmed by amphibious murder beasts.

As her armored companion pulled himself up, Cordell lingered behind and laid down cover. Her own ice rounds did a decent job of slowing the enemy down whether they managed a direct hit or not, but she could tell that ice would only serve them so much longer as a delaying tactic. Once Michael was up on the platform she was quick to join him; launching her cutlass-blade up over the edge and then magnetizing it to the deck panels, the scarlet pirate ascended with a jump and a volley of double-fired rounds, sliding across the ice Michael had placed and coming up in a roll.

So, he was about to try a desperation move, huh? The fact that he had something in mind for those grenades gave her pause at the mention of having to duck, but the two had little choice but to trust each other right then. Nodding, quickly secured her cutlass and drew out her other pistol. "Y'aint th' only one packin' heat, Vaktar. FE-02 rounds, but I only got one clip. Damned expensive." She turned suddenly, seeing movement out of the corner of her eye. A Breacher, somewhat larger than the others, had managed to leap off the deck and was about to land on the platform. Breathing in sharply, Cordell leveled her guns at it and pulled both triggers one after another. On impact, the L-19 coated the creature's slick aquatic hide in a layer of frost; a half second later the FE-02 struck, shattering the ice into a fine mist and burning a hole of white-hot fire straight through the monster's body. It fell to the platform's deck in a mess of already-dissolving parts. "I'll cover ya -- but you'd bloddy well better make it count!"

She could hear more activity just below the platform's edge; Cordell flexed her hand and sent out a pulse of her Semblance to get a sense of the enemy's locations. Sure enough, the buggers were gathering around the platform's base -- it was hard to tell, since they were mere black haze to her extra-perception, but they were likely trying to climb up like they'd done on the hull... but they were also clustering, piling up. If these Grimm could work together enough to form a living ramp up onto the platform it would make their defense just that much harder...

How exactly he came up with his idea eluded him. It was not exactly the most logistically sound of ideas, for a number of reasons. And, it required not only a mastery of the firing tendencies of your weapon, but a whole lot of luck at the same time. With a quick prayer and a deep breath, Michael pulled out his grenades and started arranging them.

Even with the fact that the crazy woman was supposed to be covering him, Michael did not have any real amount of time before he was going to get swarmed. Thankfully, he got the order down the first time. Ice grenade, ice grenade, concussive grenade. He got them loaded into the launcher, prepped for firing, and aimed directly upwards as quickly as he humanly could.

In this scenario, the timing is everything. He fired the first grenade, quickly followed by the second. After what had to be the longest second in his life, Michael fired the third grenade. From what he can tell you about his firing mechanism, that would give him approximate 2.7 seconds before hell broke loose. In that brief amount of time, Michael screamed "DUCK!" and basically tackled the captain to the ground. With him doing his best to cover the both of them with his shield, he hit the floor at the same time the concussive grenade hit the two ice grenades.

Suddenly, a shower of ice shards flew out in all directions like a hail of frozen arrows. The deck of the ship rang out with the sound of a thousand shards impacting one after the other. There was a mess of deep wooden thumps, metallic clangs, and the skewers of flesh as the rain annihilated anything caught in its wake.

There were too many... just too damned many. While Michael did whatever it was he was up to Cordell was undergoing a testing repetition: spin, sight, fire -- spin, sight, fire, -- spin, sight, fire. Each pivot on the back of her heels turned her perspective on the world 90ᵒ and within couple of heartbeats of stopping she had to pick a target, aim, fire, and pivot to the next defensive angle. It was a technique she'd picked up from one of her combat tutors during her press towards military service back in Atlas, years ago now, yet despite the span of time her body somehow still remembered: spin, sight, fire -- spin, sight, fire -- spin, sight, fire.  The good news -- also the bad news, really -- is that she didn't need to spend more than a second identifying the closest or most threatening target on each vector, as there were rapidly becoming plenty to choose from. The Breachers were clambering up onto the platform in twos and threes now, just a bit faster than Cordell could send Dust-empowered death their way. Each shot erupted briefly into a quick-forming frost or a white-hot plume, the latter intense enough to send the cold-water aquatic abominations screeching in terror even if they didn't directly get hit... and reduce them to a scorched mess of they did. It was putting some pretty severe pockmarks in the platform, too -- tiny burned-out craters, really -- but at least there was no serious risk of punching through the deck on a raised and reinforced area like this.

Spin, sight, fire -- spin, sight, fire -- spin --

-- and then, with a shout of "DUCK!", a mass of man and metal plowed into her unexpectedly and pinned her to the floor. The abrupt impact left her stunned for a second... which was good, as it kept thoughts of flailing out of Michael's protection out of her head just long enough to realize what was going on. For what felt like a solid minute a cacophony of razor-edged impacts and screaming Grimm filled the air, providing the background music for Cordell's thoughts as she realized what her opponent-turned-partner had done. Risky, yes... but clearly effective.

Finally, the silence set in. The soft sound of waves predominated over all, with no real suggestion of movement otherwise. The young pirate listened attentively for a long moment, just to be sure, then cleared her throat. "While I, er... appreciate th' 'hug', I think ye got 'em."

Normally, in this kind of situation, Michael would be doing something befitting his personality. Maybe blushing or stuttering his way through an apology as he gets up. And part of his brain realizes this. But, the rest of him just realized that in holding the shield above Captain Cordell, he did not keep enough of it over himself. His left side was completely fine, save a few knicks from a few of the grimm. His right side was riddled with ice shards, completely covering his armor. Thankfully, his armor took care of most of the smaller shards.

Michael slowly crawled his way off of the pirate, three large spikes of ice piercing his hip, thigh, and calf. Michael laid face-down on the cold metal floor, his arm coming out of the shield and leaving it on top of the captain. He wanted to grab his leg and cradle it, but he was in too much shock and pain to really move at the moment. So he just laid there, breathing heavily, as the waves continued to splash by the side of the ship.

When she felt the shield, and the body that hefted it, begin to shift off of her, Cordell's first thought was to breathe a sigh of relief, let fly a wry joke about 'breaking the ice', and then figure out how she and he were going to sort out the business that had put them in these straights to begin with. But when the shield stayed put and Michael crawled away she instantly realized something was very, very wrong.

Cordell squeezed out from beneath the shield, rolled to her feet, and immediately saw the wounds and accompanying blood. Part of her recoiled reflexively at the sight, both seeing and imagining the pain he must be in. She was no doctor, but those wounds didn't look good -- Aura could do some amazing things but it was no cure-all. Glancing around to confirm that all the Grimm on deck were down, she grit her teeth and considered her options. This had started as a raid: pure, quick, simple. It had been anything but, then turned into a survival fight. Now... now this. All this for some rum that she probably wouldn't walk away with anyhow at this rate...

... no, not the rum. This was something more now, like it or not. She sighed in exasperation, tucked away her weapons, and knelt next to her comrade-of-circumstance, examining the wounds. "Yer gonna need a hospital t' patch ye up proper... but I'll do what I can fer ye here. Shards might be deep, hard t' say. Ice'll numb the wound a bit but it'll also keep th' blood flowin, an' I won't 'ave ye bleedin' out on me after all that, savvy?" She paused, half-turning her head. "Del, status?"

"All Grimm on board the ship have been eliminated. Repairs to the systems you designated are underway -- defense weapons for the vessel will be online in approximately two minutes."

"That's a relief. Look, Del, I'mma need ye t' drop me a medkit -- no, make it two. I'll need th' extra gauze an' disinfectant."

"I understand. Sorting cargo for drop now."

That done, Cordell turned to Michael. "Geez... ain't you somethin', riskin' yer hide t' shield th' person as come t' steal from ya. Right daft that, Vaktar. Don't ye go passin' out on me, y'hear?" She paused. "... Never did get yer first name, did I?"

Michael slowly got his arms under him, lifting the front half of his body slightly as he pushed up with his forearms. Now that the adrenaline was coming out of his system, he could feel the full effects of the ice on his leg. The numbness helped a bit, but there was nothing but pain coming from his leg.

Letting his head drop back to the cold metal for a second, he took a deep breath in and tried to think of what to do about his leg. He looked up at the pirate, who surprisingly decided not to shoot him yet. At least he had that going for him.

"It's...Michael. Or dipshit, depending on the circumstance." he said before breathing deeply, the pain flowing through him in waves. "Look, I'm gonna need you to pull those out. Please."

"Yeah, I will. Just gotta wait fer--"

In the next moment the shadow of Cordell's airship fell over them both, the Red Corsair vectoring into place overhead. From beneath the nose of the plane a cargo hatch slid open and a metal box descended, tethered to a woven steel cable. The box touched down a few feet away from Michael and the magnetic grapple holding onto it released, reeling back in. Cordell quickly got over and opened up the cargo crate, then rummaged for a second before pulling out two medkits and, of all things, a small leather belt before returning to Michael's side.

"Right, well..." She surveyed his wounds one more time, laying the kits down next to her as she knelt alongside him. "No lie, Michael -- this is gonna hurt. A lot. An' there's no time fer pain killers first." She handed him the belt. "Try hard not t' move, ay? Bite down on this, then I'mma count t' three."

Waiting while he did so, she took a deep breath and gripped the largest of the protruding shards. It was plain from Cordell's expression that she was intensely focused on what she was about to do. "Okay... ready... THREE!"

Arguably the worst thing about pain is the anticipation of it -- once it's there you really have no choice but to ride it out, but if you let someone know that pain is coming there is always that primal, base aspect in them that will try to avoid it even at the cost of prolonged suffering. Cordell was no doctor but she'd patched herself up enough times to have learned that much. With one strong motion she yanked the ice crystal up and out, tossing the blood-stained wintry spear aside as she moved onto the next. It was gruesome work, but it had to be done. When the last one came free she turned to the medkits, popping both open. "Worst part's over. Leg armor's gotta come off before I can start patchin' ye up, though. How's this stuff fastened?"

One bite and a few forceful hammerfists to the deck of the ship later, Michael was free from ice with only an excruciating amount of pain to show for it. After a few seconds of panting, Michael would reach up to the collar of his armor and push a button. The armor popped open in the back. It was clearly an armor meant to be stepped into and automatically sealed, as the holes in the leg caused it to jam for a few seconds before opening fully.

Rather than the expected bleeding mass of a leg, what showed up underneath was a weird combination of colors. Firstly, you had a pair of thoroughly ruined dress pants. No tailor or dry cleaner on Remnant would try and fix them. Especially because of the second color, the blood. There was a fair amount of it, but significantly less than you would expect from multiple large wounds. The third color was the most perplexing, as it was a set of three strong white glowing spots. Michael's semblance was actively sealing his wounds.

"I...I'm gonna be fine. I'm not dead yet." he said, laying his head on the cool, damp metal he was resting on.

Cordell couldn't help but stare at those glowing spots of white radiance, seeming coming from Michael. "Is that...?" She almost whispered, blinking in surprise. Her eyes narrowed, then closed; one hand twitched ever so slightly as the briefest, most fleeting pulse of barely-there glow formed and dissipated in her palm.

In that moment she focused her mind's eye on Michael and quickly had her suspicions confirmed. This close to him she could "see" his Aura with a fair amount of detail -- it was like a human-shaped river of hazy light, flowing back and forth in conduits, paths, and rivulets within the confines of the body. It was, for lack of a better word, pooling where he'd been injured, gathering and coalescing... mending. What a thing to behold.

The moment passed and Cordell's eyes opened again. "Well, sonov'a sea dog. Ain't you nothin' if not well prepared. Healin' Semblance then, is it?" Her eyes narrowed and she lightly punched him in the shoulder, just enough to make her point. "If'n ye had someone here what cared fer ye they'd be tellin' ya not t' gamble yer safety just 'cuz yer Aura can heal ye up better'n most. Sadly, only one here's me, so all ye'll hear is..."

"... Thanks."

There was a brief pause. "Right, so. Ye gonna want those stitched up, or ye good with what'cha got?"

A moment later a low mechanical hum, like the powering up of a generator could be heard. Delahaye's voice flicked to life from Cordell's communicator. "Captain, power and functionality has been restored to the cargo vessel's defense weapons. I have overridden the IFF protocols so that they will not target the Red Corsair. Also, the Gears report that the engineering crew are close to restoring the other disabled systems. What are your orders?"

"Piss. Looks like it's nearly time fer me t' bow out." She sighed. "Del, we've put this lot through enough -- we're playin' it like we did Port Harrow. Get th' Gears back aboard. As fer you, Vaktar..." She leaned a bit closer to him. "Don't ye go ruinin' me bad reputation, ye hear? A pirate what's known fer mercy an' compassion don't command respect where it's needed. However,"

She reached into her coat pockets, drawing out a small handheld device that looked like a homemade scroll, placing it down next to Michael. "Let it never be said I leave a debt unrepaid. Ye stuck yer neck out fer me today, so I'm willin' t' do th' same. If'n ye ever have need of a pirate's services, or maybe just a smidge o' fire support, this here transponder'll get ye in touch with me -- once. Just don't call from Atlas or th' kingdom cities, savvy?"

Pirate Transponder: Can be used to summon the Red Corsair for assistance.
