Title: [Event] 1st Year Grand Finale: Nathan V Zabar [Closed]

The sun shins down on the colossus of a floating arena as the final airbus dropped of its occupants. An quick alarm sounded from the edges of the arena, marking the seating of the last few individuals in the stands. Throughout Vale, Sanus, throughout the entirety of Remnant people turned to their screens, eager to watch the coming fight. All of them wanting to see the which first year was going to be the first champion of the class.

Far below the sun, Vulco looks across the multiple screens set up in the announcers booth, his assistant Derek stood nearby, going over the files of the two finalists. The screens flick through camera angles, flickering to the arena floor and then to multiple angles of the crowd as Vulco presses down on a keyboard below the screens. On the screens the hundreds of spectators move almost restlessly in their seats, idly chatting with those around them about the upcoming match and showing down on overpriced concessions. Among them, Malina sits speaking happily with professor Titania seated next to her. The two exchange a few remarks and a quick chuckle from Titania before the screen flickers and changes to a different section of the crowd. Directly in the center of the screen, Graviton sits eagerly chowing down on an obscenely large bucket of popcorn and seemingly talking happily with Fleetwood, his assistant. Meanwhile, Fleetwood seems to be doing her best to act like she doesn't know the fourty something year old man sitting next to her with the popcorn bucket the size of a small child. Once more the screen flickers and cuts to a section of the crowd sitting near the front row.

A girl with shoulder length, light pink hair and blue eyes sits with a small "Go Zabar" sign that seemed like it had been made minutes before. She sits alone, not having anyone she knows next to her to talk with and seemingly restlessly moving her leg up and down in anticipation for the match. A few rows above the girl, another similarly lonely girl with long blue hair and orange eyes sits in wait of the match. She doesn't seem anxious like the pink haired girl, however, she sits still and patient, keeping her eyes locked on the arena in intense interest.

Far above, back in the announcer's booth, Derek whispers something into Vulco's ear and the man nods.

Showtime.

The crackle of the loudspeaker could be heard throughout the arena as it switched on. "LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLADIES AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAND GENTLEMEEEEEEEEEEN!" The crowd erupted into a roar of excitement as Vulco's voiced filled the coliseum. "WELCOME TO THE FINAL MATCH OF THE FIRST YEAR BRACKET!" The crowd erupted into another ceremonious cheer, whoops and hollers came from all corners of Remnant as people sat down on their couches, snacks in hand. "I AM YOUR HOST, VULCOOOOOOOOOO AND THIS IS GONNA BE F ҉   ҉ KING AWESOME!! LET'S HOLD THE CEREMONY UNTIL AFTER THESE TWO FINAL COMBATANTS ARE OUT ON FIELD THOUGH, SHALL WE!?" The crowd cheered heartily once more. "OUR FIRST COMBATANT HAS AN INFAMOUS REPUATATION FOR INJURING ANY WHO GET IN HIS WAY TO THE TOP, I DON'T HAVE TO TELL YOU HIS NAME, IT'S NATHAN EAUUUUUUUU!! SAY WHAT YOU WILL ABOUT HIS TACTICS, HE'S GONNA BE A DEADLY HUNTER IN HIS TIME,
AND A RUTHLESS OPPONENT FOR OUR SECOND COMBATANT, ZABAR AGAAAAA!! THE ONE, THE ONLY, THE VACUAN THAT COMES WITH A SMACKIN'!!
" The crowd erupted into applause as the two students entered onto the arena floor and began to make their way toward the center. "NEITHER OF THESE YOUNG MEN HAVE BEEN BESTED YET, BUT ONE WILL FALL TODAY, AFTER ALL ONLY ONE CAN LEAVE THE WINNER!" The two combatants reach the very center of the arena and grasp each others hands in a firm handshake and as their hands meet, the floor beneath them rises up into the air.

A chuckle is heard through the speakers of the arena as Vulco leans in toward the microphone in his booth. "NOW THIS'LL BE NEW TO THOSE YOUNG AND OLD. IN ADDITION TO THE NEW ENVIRONMENTS PRESENTED THIS YEAR, WE HAVE A BRAND NEW FINAL MATCH SYSTEM, RIGHT NOW IT'S JUST A FLAT CIRCLE, BUT YOU ALL JUST WAIT FOR THE SURPRIIISE! BUT FOR NOW, SINCE THERE'S NO ENVIRONMENTAL SPINNER, THE MATCH MAY START ONCE THE TWO COMBATANTS MAKE THEIR WAY TO OPPOSITE ENDS OF THE CIRCLE!!!"

The two students make their way to their respective ends of the arena and turn on their heels to face each other once more, each readying themselves for attack.

The floor itself has an intricate pattern on it, spiraling inward toward a large engraving of the Vytal symbol in the center. The floor is roughly the size of Yang and Mercury's match arena in its current state. Getting knocked off may result in a lose, but only if the contestant reaches the bottom 100 ft (30.48m) below.

(A coin flip has decided that Nathan can make the first move.)

As the camera was shwoing the crowd a flicker of movement could be seen as Gray's form ducked behind a seat in an attempt to avoid being caught on camera. He was seated just behind the girl with blue hair and in his ducking managed to smack his head into the back of her seat.  "Dammit. ow"

Right. This was it. The finale. He'd actually made it all the way here without using his trump card, which made him a bit warm and fuzzy inside. Although he was a bit nervous - unsurprisingly failing to demonstrate as much - before entering the arena itself, he'd switched into battle mode the moment he crossed the doorway. Well, almost, he'd actually been instructed on the procedure before the match would actually start. He shook Zabar's harm in a firm manner, his face being the very description of neutrality while he did so.

As he reached his side of the circle and the match started, he took out Ergia and switched it to staff form, activating its secondary functions as well. He knew his opponent, this time around. Or at least, he'd seen him fight several times. He didn't need to test the waters as much, planning on going full throttle from the start.

The majority of the staff sections covered themselves in a bright orange glow, through which electrical arcs played.

He took a few steps forward to get away from the edge, waiting for his opponent.

Razzy was there. Oh, was Razzy there.

Seated as close to the front rows as he could, the boy had his foam finger and prop flag ready, but that was not all. This was the finale, and Vulco wasn't the only one bringing out the big guns. The pink fighter had purchased a Zabar hat, shirt, jacket and incredibly obnoxious vuvuzela. At the same time, however, he wanted to support his fellow student and guy representing Beacon as a whole - so he had convinced a group of friends who would occasionally swap between holding up signs that read 'GO ZABAR' and 'VICTORY FOR VACUO', and signs that read 'BEAT HIM FOR BEACON' and 'BREAK A LEG, NATHAN'. Razzy didn't ask for them to make that last sign, but they sure did.

Zabar stood mere feet from the edge of the circle, glancing down at the ground far below before turning around to face his opponent. The sun shone down into his eyes before he quickly adjusted his hat to make sure there weren't any distractions during the fight. This would be more intense than the other fights and Zabar knew it, no poncho, no overshirt, just his boots, his pants, his chestplate, his gauntlets, and his hat. One might be forgiven for thinking that his upper half was robotic with how little skin was shown compared to the gleaming metal encasing his chest and arms. On his right arm he had his symbol, the hawk, painted onto his gauntlet's bicep area, but on his left side he had a new. On his left arm, painted in a golden hue, were the three swords of Vacuo's symbol.

He stretched his arms upward before lowering them into a ready position, each ready to activate his semblance in case Nathan decided to start off with a gun fight, though that quickly proved not to happen as Nathan took a similarly defensive stance. A smirk formed under the shade of the hat as Zabar started to slowly walk toward the other side of the arena.

As he approached the center of the circle, he took one last chance to cycle through his chambers of dust in his gauntlets. 'Four chambers each, two chambers of kinetic dust in each, fire and ice in right gauntlets and lightning and ice in the left.' He knew who he was up against, vaguely at least, mobility would be key in the fight.

As Zabar made it past the centermost point, his arms dropped behimd him and the sound of a gunshot rang out, signalling the blast of kinetic dust that came from both gauntlets, sending him rocketing forward toward Nathan. As he approached, he swung his arms around to his front and shifting the chamber to the ice dust, sending out a torrent a freezing particles ahead of him.

Brook raised an eyebrow as she turned to face the boy behind her. "You good?" She simply asked with a sense of half sincerity in her voice.

This was the point where Zabar sprang forward. He'd seen it in previous matches, was currently expecting it to happen at literally any point in the match, he still almost just flinched at the display. Apparently, sudden bursts of speed had that effect.

As it were however, he more or less just jumped and threw himself to his left as soon as he could - or, in other words, as fast as his reflexes allowed. While this made him avoid the mini-blizzard that ensued, he still spun his staff perpendicular to the direction Zabar was, the heat of the air around it turning any remaining Ice Dust into (relatively) harmless steam. He then resumed his previous defensive stance, keeping an eye on his opponent at all times.

Boy, was this going to be fun.

...No, really.

Zabar watched as Nathan appeared to the side and evaded his attack, not surprising to be honest, but this was just the beginning. Zabar continued his path through the air, sending him flying off the edge of the ring and down toward the ground. As soon as he'd passed the edge, however, he'd spun his chambers back to kinetic dust. Now, he pointed both arms downward and let out another burst of dust, sending him rocketing into the air. As he reached his apex, he let out another burst of dust and sent himself rocketing back down toward the ground, toward Nathan, with a kick firmly aimed toward his chest. As soon as that burst fired off he switched his chambers to lighting on his left hand and ice on his right, awaiting the counterattack that was sure to follow.

Gray leaned back in his seat with his hand that wasn't attached to the arm in a sling pressed to his head where he had hit it against the chair. He heard a voice asking if someone was ok. oh wait. that was directed at him.  "Yeah. I think. That was stupid anyway."

Nathan stood still as Zabar... disappeared from sight beyond the arena's edge. Taking his chance now that the opponent wasn't there (for a split second, anyway), as well as anticipating what would no doubt be a somewhat aggressive return onto the stage, Nathan backed off several steps.

And there he was. The Vacuan rocketed back up, then forwards again. Nathan twisted himself towards the center of the arena, barely managing to clear the speeding foot aimed at his sternum. He kept the sideways momentum he had to get a bit of distance between him - whowas good at CQC - and Zabar - who was mostly a melee person, from what he'd seen, before going for a mild swing towards the opponent's shoulder as he landed.

Zabar quickly brought up his right arm just in time to meet the staff with his forearm. "Not gonna be that easy." He said with a smirk before bending his arm forward and pushing down against the staff in an attempt to push it down toward the ground all the while he shot out his left arm toward Nathan's chest and let out a continuous plume of flames.

When Nathan realized Zabar's... gloved sleeves didn't really care about Ergia, he had the presence of mind to lift up and back the staff, stopping the opponent from locking it to the ground. He also moved to he is left again when he saw the Vacuan's free arm aim at his face. Not pre-emptively dodging those shiny gauntlets was not a very good way to win.

In retaliation, he used the other end of Ergia, aided by the push Zabar gave with his right arm, to smack him in the left kidney, even as a blazing inferno manifested itself where Nathan stood mere moments ago.

Zabar felt the pain of the hit connecting with his left side and quickly swing his left arm around to his left side, sending out a whip of red hot flames toward Nathan. Using the moment as a distraction, he quickly rolled away, a genuine smile forming on his lips. He was starting to get a feel for Nathan. Quicker than the others and less brash. Good.

The chamber in his left gauntlet before ending on the kinetic dust, just before the sharp claws of his left gauntlet extended outward. He quickly placed his left hand to the floor and let off a blast of dust, sending him rocketing forward toward Nathan once more, but halfway to his destination, he quickly flicked his wrist to the side and let off another burst of dust, sending him to the right side of his opponent. Just as he passed by his side, Zabar slammed his clawed gauntlet into the ground, anchoring him and causing him to spin around and face back toward his opponent's back before sending out a blast of ice dust toward his feet.

Catalina is here. He found his defeat at the finalist pretty solid, although it is still embarrassing to scream in pain in combat, in front of the entire world.

Regardless. He's here, and he's ready to cheer for Nathan, not caring for whatever the keyboard warriors or legit hunters would say. He smiled and crossed his legs when Nathan landed two hits and took none himself.

Nathan quickly backpedaled as Zabar flicked flames his way, then slowly walked to his right to get closer to the center of the arena. Meanwhile, his opponent rolled away - a good thing since he wasn't exactly planning on pushing his luck any further, for now at least.

Zabar then almost quite literally flew straight at him. Nathan started stepping right, only to see the Vacuan imitate him (albeit at a far greater speed). Not waiting to see where this would lead, he jumped to his left, receiving himself further off in a roll. As he got back up, he noticed that a non-negligible layer of ice had formed around his calves and feet. Luckily, though, the ice was highly uneven, so adherence was only mildly hampered. The crystalline water around his ankle had broken upon landing, leaving him with one of the strangest sets of armored boots he'd ever seen.

Since everything was (mostly) fine, he resumed his previous defensive stance.

Zabar quickly glanced down at the broken ice still attached around Nathan's leg and gave a little huff as he slowly stood back up from his crouched position. "Ya know, for someone who got known for shootin' three guys, you don't do a whole lot of attackin'." He spoke with an almost disappointed tone as his right gauntlet spun to the fire dust, giving the gauntlet a faint red glow, and the left gauntlet spun to ice. "Now let me guess..." He began as he took a slow step forward, dropping his left arm to his side as if readying himself to whip a pistol form a holster. "Tryin' to get me to waste all my dust? Orrr maybe just feelin' me out, is that it?" He continued, taking another step. "I gotta say, attack, dodge, attack, dodge, attack, dodge ain't too interestin' for the guys up there." He pointed with his right thumb up toward the crowd around them.

"Come on, I had my turn, it's your turn now." He grinned as he lowered his right hand down and pointed out his index finger in a finger gun motion.

In the meanwhile, Mauve sat in one of the seats closer to the front, slightly incognito. Well, not really, she'd just tied up her hair to mostly hide the purple tips and worn sunglasses. Her mother didn't exactly want her there in person and definitely not on camera for obvious reasons, but Mauve was going to support her significant other anyway... With her presence at least because there was no way she was going to hold one of those annoying banners up. Or cheer. Ladies did not cheer in gladiator-esque battles. Or attend gladiator-esque battles at all but such was Remnant and such was tradition. Mauve didn't enjoy these things much, not really, but eh.

Nathan was doing well so far, but being on the receiving side was so much easier than being the attacker. To be totally honest Mauve had mixed feelings as to who would win, skill not included in her thoughts. On one hand if Nathan won then he'd certainly bring himself and in some way their team some glory. But then again if he lost then it would make his earlier... issues... less important as they didn't lead to his victory and he'd already made an impression on the rest of the world, good or bad.

As Zabar stood up, glaringly more relaxed than a few moments ago, Nathan's eyes remained trained on him. He didn't attack because that wasn't how he did things - he was more about exploiting the opponent's weaknesses in moments of vulnerability than he was about creating opportunities for himself.

Then Zabar spoke - in a calm, casual manner at that, which nearly threw him off. Thinking that the talk seemed to be longer than a short quip, the receiver actually listened for once. He still took a half-step back as the Vacuan took one forward, though.

Well, it seemed an answer was in order, here. Still keeping on his toes, he said " Correction: I only shot one of my opponents past his Aura, and only injured two, including the guy I shot. And although it may be uninteresting, it is very efficient, seeing as I've made it this far. Did you see my fight with Cat? We recreated trench warfare! ...Accidentally!"

A slight grin spread to the left of his face as he continued. "...Besides, you're gonna have to push harder if you want me to use all the tricks up my sleeves." Did that work? He wasn't sure if that had worked. Although he was entirely insensitive to provocation, be it friendly or not, he knew it wasn't necessarily the case for every other fighter out there.

Zabar let out a disappointed sigh as he dropped his right hand, shaking his head slightly as he did so. "You don't always get the horns when you poke the bull, I guess." He gave a slight chuckle as he locked eyes with Nathan from beneath the brim of his hat. "That's somethin' we should both keep in mind." He flashed a quick smile and lifted his right hand up to place against his hip before quickly pulling it away with a short "Oh!" and cycling the chamber around to the ice dust. "Nearly burnt myself there!" He said with a soft laugh as he took another step toward Nathan.

He paused there for a moment, just a moment, as he took a good hard l]ook over his opponent. He seemed to be around the same height as Zabar, didn't seem to have any pouches other than the one, but then again he didn't get a good look at his opponent's back yet. Could be hiding something under the coat, but that would take longer to access than just having it on the outside like the visible one. The staff itself wasn't anything special aside from the dust effects, even through the gauntlets he could still feel some of the heat radiating off of that thing and the tingle of the electricity.

"Alright!" Zabar sound loudly, breaking the silence between the two. "Hows about this?" He lifted both arms up and pointed them slightly to the right and to the left of Nathan, taking another step forward in the process. "You fight back, you come right at me. Run to the left or the right and I can promise, it won't be too hard at all to catch you with some ice." He took another step forward, the smile on his face turning slightly into more of a smug look. "Or you can keep taking a step or so back every time I step forward and I can corner you against the edge of the arena, and I don't think either of use want somethin' that simple... So. What's it gonna be, Nathan? Left, right, or center?"

Zabar took a third step forward, tensing up his arms in preparation as a thought crossed his mind, bringing him back to his match with Juno. 'Left. Right. Center... or above...'

As Zabar spoke, Nathan continued to listen. And also took a half-step back each time Zabar took one forward. The gap was slowly closing, but Zabar... really looked like he wanted Nathan to attack.

A few seconds after Zabar had finished speaking, Nathan launched forward, low to the ground, and thrusted Ergia from below directly into Zabar's chest.

Zabar grinned wider as he saw Nathan dart forward toward him. He quickly flicked his wrists, turning the palms of his hands inward and down toward Nathan's legs. He'd hoped for a straight attack, but one low the ground? Well that was just dandy. More of his opponent open to the freezing cold as he let out a stream of ice dust downward while he dove to to his left keeping his arms aimed toward Nathan before ducking into a roll and cutting one stream off of the ice dust.

As Zabar quickly recovered from the roll he closed the second stream of ice dust and looked back toward his opponent and the thin path of ice that he'd created between them.

Aaah, dammit. This didn't go over as well as planned. Nnnnope. He just wasn't fast enough, really. Still, he could get away mostly unscathed.

Continuing his forward charge, Nathan zoomed right past a dodging Zabar before getting a safe distance away from the guy. When he was, he proceeded to quickly melt off the ice that had formed on his legs and feet - the ankles were almost frozen stiff and the weight was seriously bothersome. Ergia started making quick work of it by merely touching the ice, producing copious amounts of steam while doing so.

Zabar grinned as the steam rose up from the melting ice surrounding Nathan's legs, some of the water had evaporated away but not all. In a quick motion he shot another path of thin ice between himself and puddle that had formed around Nathan's feet, using the steam rising as a hopefully quick cover. As soon as the thin layer of ice finished forming and spun the chamber within his right gauntlet to fire dust. 'That staff sure is helpful for getting out of a tight spot.' He thought as he quickly leveled his right arm toward the ice on the floor and let out a burst of flames, quickly melting the ice on the floor into a puddle of water. 'Must be preeeeeeeetty hot to make that ice into steam so quickly, but there's no way it could evaporate everythin'.' As the flames stopped coming from his right hand he quickly fell to his knee, and placed his left palm into the puddle as the chamber in his left gauntlet spun around.

'You left yourself wide open.' He thought as the chamber clicked to a stop and Zabar let loose a jolt of lightning, traveling up through the path and directly toward Nathan's wet feet.

Nathan more or less stared as Zabar did things on his own. Rushing the man down wasn't a good idea - anyway, not yet.

Zabar sent out another stream of Ice Dust towards him, but Nathan merely switched which leg armor he was melting as the freezing cold didn't quite reach him. He did, however, step back a bit when the Ice Dust changed into a roaring flame. What the heck? What was he doing? The only thing he was doing right now was...

...Wait, why would he do that? That served no p-

Oh.

Oh shit.

Everything clicked in Nathan's mind. As the remaining chunks of ice more or less either slid or fell off his jeans, Nathan slammed an end of the pole into the ground and used all his strength to lift himself up and back. Alas, even though his reaction speed was pretty damn good, it was too late. Lightning arced through the water, and although he was already in the process of getting away, he certainly wasn't able to avoid the majority of the blast.

Damn. He'd have to step up his game.

As the lightning arced up to meet his opponent, Zabar wasted no time in standing back up and shifting the chambers in his gauntlets once more, this time both landing back onto the primary kinetic dust canister. He mimicked dusting off his hands as Nathan landed back onto his feet. "Guess ya didn't see my fight with Juno then, huh?" The Vacuan chuckled as he raised his arms and spread his palms, ready to catch anything Nathan might send his way. "Combinin' dust ain't just for the dust specialists, ya know. Sometimes you gotta improvise. Now let's try this agai-"

As the words left Zabar's mouth, the floor shook and rumbled. "What the hell-" Was all he got out before the booming voice of Vulco filled the stadium. "I TOLD YOU THERE'D BE A SURPRISE,
AND THIS IS IT! INTRODUCING THE MODULAR ARENA!
" The rumbling slowed to a stop and pillars began to rise from the ground, seemingly at random. "THIS PUPPY CAN HAVE OVER TEN DIFFERENT ARRANGEMENTS JUST WITHIN THIS MATCH ALONE! AND IT'S SET TO GO OFF AT RANDOM TIMES, SO i HOPE YOU TWO KNOW HOW TO ADAPT!!"

Zabar let out an annoyed sigh as the pillars around him finished rising, almost trapping him against the edge of the arena and cutting off his line of sight for his opponent. Looking up quickly he saw that he could easily reach the tops of the pillars with two good bursts of dust, though that might leave him open once he got up there. He paused for a moment before kneeling down and placing both palms to the floor, glancing back to where he had been able to see Nathan before. "If he doesn't get the same idea as me then he might come around there and be lookin' for me here... but if I'm off to the side and above..." He mumbled before nodding to himself and firing off two bursts, sending him flying into the air and toward the top of a pillar to his right.

As he flew the air he furrowed his brow and grit his teeth. 'That blast might of tipped him off on what I'm doin'... Damnit.' Just before landing on the pillar, he quickly shifted his right gauntlet to fire dust before spinning around and shooting out his hand, frantically looking back for any sign of Nathan.

Getting backing a defensive stance, Nathan defended himself - well, in a way. "I was in the freaking stands during that match, mate. It just took a bit too long for your contrived setup to click with me."

A few moments afterwards - Zabar was, somewhat unsurprisingly, taunting him and Nathan was about to yell back something about Dust mixing - the entire arena shook like the engines on the Colosseum were having a fit. The announcer screamed, as per usual, something or other - to the crowd's great delight - as Nathan found himself to be standing on a rising pillar.

Oh. Oh no. Oh no. This was too good. This was beautiful.

Not too shaken about being suddenly hoisted up, he retained his defensive stance as he lost sight of his opponent, only to see him propel himself up onto another pillar.

Nice.

Zabar relaxed slightly as he saw Nathan across from him on another pillar, seemingly taking a defensive stance just like him. He let out a soft chuckle as he shifted his focus from the ground to his opponent. "Like I was tryin' to say, let's try this again." He hopped a pillar closer to Nathan as he kept his right arm trained on his opponent, choosing to keep his left down by his side. "I'll admit, I'm a bit curious about how much you know. I mean, ya know, obviously you've seen my semblance." He raised an eyebrow as he readied himself to fire off another plume of flames. "It wouldn't be fair if you held back on using yours, ya know." Zabar smiled and paused for a moment, taking the time to just look slightly past his opponent and to the massive crowd around them both.

"Now!" He said suddenly as he focused back on Nathan. "We have a game to play for these guys." The words left his mouth just as the flames began spewing forth from the silvery gauntlet and out toward Nathan.

As Zabar jumped, Nathan took the opportunity to look around himself quickly, spotting possible places to move to without having to use his jumppack. He was very quick to refocus on his opponent, though.

He mostly let Zabar talk, staring at him all the while. Oh, buddy, you had no idea how he'd like to use his semblance. And yes, it was unfair right now, but that was the entire point - those who knew about said semblance could be counted on a single hand. Other matches before this would've been far, far easier if he'd used his semblance. He just didn't want to rely on it. Besides, the drawbacks were currently pretty heavy and he couldn't quite one-shot everything (at all), so keeping the usage low was ideal.

Yooouuu just hold on, buddy. Maybe you'll get to see it in the flesh.

Until then, Nathan jumped to his right onto the pillar he'd previously spotted, making sure to land with an angle to cancel most of his momentum. The pillar was smaller than the one currently being heated, after all.

Zabar sighed as he moved his hand to point toward Nathan's new position. "You can't keep runnin' forever, ya know." The air in front of Zabar's hand began to shimmer as his semblance activated. Flames began to flow out of the gauntlet, shooting out just past the shimmering air before being pulled back into it, swirling around and around before condensing into a ball. "Look, you keep playin' defensive then *I'll* start playin' defensive. Then we're *both* playin' defensive and no one wins. Now get over here and fight!" He called out before ceasing the flames and releasing the fireball.

The ball sang through the air like a roaring engine, flying straight toward the flat of the pillar Nathan stood on.

Oh. Oh here it came. Zabar was doing a thing and that thing he was doing happened to be in the process of creating something very similar to a standard fireball. He also happened to be talking but this was something Nathan regarded as being utterly unimportant right now, having bigger fish to fry - or, in this case, avoid frying.

Nathan lost no time being in awe at the genuinely striking flows of flame and Dust gathering in front of Zabar's palm. Turning off the electricity and heat on Ergia, he turned it back into its storage form and hooked it into its place within the harness.

Jumping off the pillar and away from Zabar as far as he could, he received himself further below with a brief thrust of his pack before using his remaining momentum to run away further, keeping the pillar between himself and his opponent. Taking Ergia back out into staff form, he turned around at just the right time to witness the fireball explode where he had just stood, lighting up the surroundings as it did so.

Dammit. Since when did he need to close in on his enemy?

"This is gettin' real old, man!" Zabar called out after the flames subsided from the pillar, leaving not a trace of Nathan behind. the chambers within his gauntlets began to cycle back around to kinetic dust. 'I could launch myself up to get a better look... but he might've transformed his weapon to the gun form.' He glanced down at his hand for just a moment before looking back up to the pillars. 'I can afford it.' He knelt down once more, placing the palms of his hands flat against the pillar, and launched himself upward into the air with two bursts of kinetic dust.

As he soared higher and higher, he took a quick moment to look around him. The crowd was in a frenzy. Despite even the defensive combat, they were loving it. Thousands of people from all corners of Remnant surrounded him, watched both him and his opponent fight, and cheered or booed as each hit landed its mark. He'd give them something else to cheer for.

Zabar reached his peak just in time to be able to see Nathan, waiting patiently behind the pillar he'd jumped down from. With a smirk, he cycled his left gauntlet back to fire dust and activated his semblance once more, filling it with flames as he fell back toward the fight.

He cut off the flames just before landing on a pillar to the side of Nathan and quickly hopping back off toward the ground. As he fell, he released the fireball directly toward Nathan, exploding just in time for Zabar to land back on solid ground.

As Zabar came into view, Nathan could clearly see another fireball, nearly mesmerizing by its convection and haphazard rolling and tumbling. He readied to run away, dodge, or otherwise once again.

Then Zabar landed on a pilar close by, and... jumped... off...

...

Whilst becoming vaguely aware that the fireball had now left Zabar's care and was hurtling towards him, Nathan started running. Right at the Vacuan. Or at least, his predicted landing spot.

Not getting far enough away by the time the fireball lost its integrity, Nathan got slightly singed - well, okay, not slightly, he got outright burned - by the expanding mass. However, he held strong, using all the power he could to swing the hardest swing possible right at Zabar's back.

Zabar saw Nathan run up to him as the fireball flew past, exploding behind him and causing the arena to light up once more. In the flash of light, he brought his right arm up to block the staff, a loud clang erupting as, for a moment, it seemed like it had worked. Then, as the moment passed, Zabar felt his arm ripped down toward the ground with is body following suit, quickly slamming his arm into the ground and his head down next to it. Everything went fuzzy for a moment as he could hear the muffled voice of Vulco screaming about some table being broken in half. As the fuzziness faded from his vision, he lifted himself and slammed his fist into the ground, creating another loud clang.

"That's what I'm talkin' 'bout!" He yelled as he lifted himself up off the ground and back into a fighting stance. "That's what I've been waiting for!" The chambers in his gauntlets spun around and landed on the fire and lightning canisters. The gauntlets began to glow a searing red and crackled with electricity as Vulco's voiced filled the arena once more, screaming out "ARENAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA SHIIIIIIIIIFT!
 TIME FOR A CAGE MATCH!
" Just as the pillars came sliding back into the ground, the around around the edge of the arena shone with a reflective light, almost as if glass had encased the field.

Zabar smiled and ducked forward toward Nathan, elbowing the staff out of his way and grabbing onto his shoulder with his right hand, sending a searing hot pain into the boy. Then, just as quickly as he grabbed him, Zabar rocketed his fist toward Nathan's gut, expecting him to double over, he pulled back his right arm and slammed a powerful right hook directly toward the side of Nathan's head.

As the hit connected on the arm of a very quick to react Zabar, Nathan's Aura flashed bright white enough to become the dominant source of light for a few dozen meters. Almost instantly, he felt the urge to bend forward, in a vain attempt to annihilate the sensation of blood leaving his head. Still in the thick of it, he was unable to do much more than take the hit when Zabar launched one right into his stomach.

He did, however, find the strength to roll to his right immediately afterwards, the scorching hot hand on his shoulder proving to be mildly stimulating. As he landed and he didn't feel like he was a quarter of the way through fainting, he used the occasion to send a half-hearted jab at Zabar's left knee.

Zabar used his missed shot to spin back around, following Nathan with his eyes. 'Not getting away that easy.' He thought as he saw Nathan, still on his side, halfheartedly jab toward him. He quickly dropped down on one knee and punched down against staff, attempting to pin it to the ground as he brought his other knee forward to slam into Nathan's face. Managing to stay out of reach of Zabar's knee by remaining on his side, Nathan felt a whole lot better when he stopped being in a blood-drained state, albeit remained shaky. Rolling further to his right, he avoided the tongues of flame. Zabar kept his hand trained on Nathan as he rolled, he wouldn't be so foolish as to keep his flames pointed in a single direction, and deftly sidestepped to the right and out of the way of the thrust as he saw his opponent begin to move toward him. The flames were quickly snuffed out from Zabar's clenched fist as Nathan passed him and he quickly kicked off the ground toward him.

The Vacuan slid toward Nathan, left arm bent and elbow pointed out to strike against his back, with his right arm pulled all the way back and thrust forward, carried by the momentum of the slide, toward the small of Nathan's back in an attempt to send him flying toward glassy cage that surrounded the arena several meters away.

As Nathan was covered in flames, he did his best to endure the resulting pain, keeping an eye trained on Zabar as much as possible. The man avoided his strike, but that wasn't exactly unexpected.

As he shot past the Vacuan, he kept the opponent within line of sight, knowing very well that not looking is the same as not caring in a fight. Zabar felt the end of staff slam against his chest, had he not been wearing his chest piece, that attack might have winded him and cost him valuable time. Instead, he grit his teeth and endured the pain, letting the heat wash over him and the electricity crackle across the armor. Wasting no more time, he quickly brought both of his hands down onto the staff and gripped. hard.

He turned his body to the right shifting his grip on the staff as he did so, and planted his feet firmly to the ground. He arms tensed as he swung the staff around with his opponent still attached and launched them away from him, toward the ground on the opposite side of the arena.

Just as Nathan hit the ground, the glassy cage around the arena flashed and disappeared. The sound of Vulco laughing from the announcers booth rung around the stadium, overtaking any cheers or boos that had been in place before. "WELCOME TO THE SLOPE, B ҉   ҉ CHES!" was all that could be heard before the ground rumbled once more, and began to slowly tip to the side, placing Nathan at the bottom of the hill and Zabar at the top.

Zabar looked down at the arena as it sloped below him, Nathan was up now, same as him and recovered from the shifting floor. As he looked down at his opponent and the floor below him, an idea came to mind, one that he would only get a single chance at. Whether it was a good idea or a bad idea, he wasn't sure. All he was sure of was that it was an interesting idea, and that was good enough.

The chamber in the Vacuan's left arm spun back around to propulsion dust as Zabar pointed it down toward Nathan and fired off a burst of dust, sending him sliding backward, just barely against the edge of the arena. Once he had solid footing, the chamber cycled around again to ice dust, keeping it pointed directly toward Nathan in case he got any bright ideas. 'There might not be much left in this gauntlet, but there has to be enough for at least the plan... the ice dust doesn't give off any effect to the gauntlet, if I can catch him off guard by making him think I'm still on kinetic dust then I can get the advantage... if not...'

Zabar raised his right hand high above his head and opened his palm up to the sun above, and as the light beat down from the sun and the air above Zabar's hand begin to shimmer, flames began shooting up into the air before being pulled back down toward his palm and being whipped around into perfect, explosive ball that grew each second. As Nathan attempted to pull his staff back into a defensive position, he very perceptively noticed it wasn't budging. He also noticed, with his eyes, that Zabar was securing his grip.

He only had the time to briefly brace before getting outright lifted into the air and casually thrown to nearly the other side of the arena. Retracting the staff mid-flight, he received himself straight into the cage. Oddly enough, it felt so smooth it was slick, yet was as unyielding (or perhaps, even more so) as a block of tungsten.

Picking himself up with Ergia in compact form in his left hand, Nathan looked back at Zabar as the slight... what was it? Refraction? Caused by the cage amplified, then disappeared with a slight flash. The stage then proceeded to tilt.

Like, the entire thing.

Managing to retain balance, he watched as Zabar walked back to the opposite edge and took what he guessed was a defensive stance. Except the arm thrust right into the air, that only reminded him of-

Aaah. Yep. Yyyyep, there it was, the spirit bomb or whatchama call it. He genuinely didn't know what the Vacuan used to refer to that move, he realized.

Keeping Ergia as it is, he also backed off a bit, but not right up to the edge of the arena, steadied himself as best he could and kept alert, ready to use Ergia in whichever way would be most fitting.

Then, he waited.

Zabar glanced upward briefly toward the mass of flames that loomed above him. It was nearly as big as he was now and he could feel the heat beating down off it, hotter than any day in the desert he'd seen. He could feel the strain on his body from the semblance but he could feel he had more than enough time left to do what needed to be done.

In a quick motion, Zabar activated his semblance with his left had, switched the fireball over to it, spun the chambers in both gauntlets to lightning on the left and ice on the right, and started to funnel lightning dust into the already large ball above him.

"It's do or die now, Nathan!" Zabar yelled down to his opponent over the sound of roaring flames and crackling electricity. "You seem pretty intent on walkin' outta here unscathed, bud, but you've made one mistake too many!" He pointed his right hand down to the ground in front of him and smiled brightly. "You're predicable, try to fix that!"

A wave of ice dust shot out of Zabar's hand as he jumped forward and landed on it, letting him slide down the sloped arena extremely quickly. As he sped toward Nathan, he bent his arm down slightly, preparing to slam down the fireball onto Nathan. The flames licked downward at his arm and though he couldn't feel the pain through thanks to the gauntlets, he felt the heat. The electricity that was still be shot into it sparked around wildly, crackling and flickering off of the gauntlet almost as loudly as the flames.

His hairs stood on end, he tensed his right arm, ready to spin the chamber at any moment, he could feel the tingle of electricity through his body. He felt alive.

Then Zabar started talking, kinda hard to hear, what with the madhouse he had in his hand, after which he started... sliding? Yep, he started sliding towards Nathan.

As soon as the ice started coming out of Zabar's hand, Nathan started running as fast as he could to his left, putting Ergia in its harness at the same time. He was skirting the arena's edge, but he'd at least avoid being charged by the Vacuan.

Dammit. Dammit, dammit, dammit. This was not good. Not only did Zabar have great defense at range, he had - at the moment, anyway - great offense from afar as well. To win, the easiest thing to do would probably be to strike him with his semblance. This was not a valid option with the current light (and, incidentally, heat) source frolicking above the Vacuan's hand. His only ranged option was Ergia's rifle form, and he couldn't exactly use that with his semblance now co--

Oh. Oh but wait just a sec. This might work.

Keeping up his pace, and maybe even speeding up due to Zabar apparently being in the Sprinting Zone, Nathan reached behind his back and took his weapon. While still running, he put it between his hands, holding onto the top and bottom, and forced the chamber to cycle. The round already present therein got lazily ejected into the barrel, which opened to let it pass, while another slug took its place.

When the metallic bullet hit his left hand, Nathan changed his grip to hold it like he usually did - that is, by the side rather than the extremity. He simultaneously closed his left fit around the small object and, upon analysis of his current situation, thought it better to put Ergia back in its harness rather than deploying it into staff form in an attempt to confuse the adversary.

Zabar could feel the weight of the ball pressing down on his arm, there wasn't anymore time, it happened now or it didn't happen at all. He glanced upward just in time to see the lightning sputter out and a smile formed against gritted teeth. This was as big as he'd ever gone with dust, and as far as he cared to test himself. He refocused on his opponent one last time before he finalized the plan. He was close, close enough, and had his weapon in that jump pack form.

Perfect.

Zabar took one last dash forward and leaped up into the air, followed by a burst of kinetic dust from his right hand, sending him high into the and directly above his opponent. He pulled his arm back and focused all the aura he could into his semblance, every bit of expendable aura to make it faster. This was, win or lose, the final strike. With all his might, Zabar brought down the enormous fireball toward his opponent, slightly to the left and toward the center of the arena in anticipation of any dodge. The fireball sped down toward the ground, flames and forks of lightning trailing off of it as it sailed straight and true.

Zabar watched the ball explode down below him as he began to fall back toward the arena below. The brilliant light that shot out as the ball slammed against metal filled the arena briefly and the shockwave knocked Zabar backward as he fell further.

A ringing filled Zabar's ears as he fell, only broken by the sound of a sickening thud as Zabar landed directly on his back. Pain shot through him, through his head, his chest, his legs. He clenched his teeth and lifted his head toward the direction of the explosion, toward the direction of where Nathan was. He raised right arm up slowly, straining against the weight of the gauntlet, and opened his palm, ready to strike with one last ditch effort.

The arm fell with a loud clang when Zabar quickly glanced at the aura gauges set up around the arena. 4% to 29%. He let out a long held breath and dropped his head back down against the cold metal. A smile crept along his lips as a feint laugh escaped them. "Half above red... but no energy to move... not sure if Dustin'll be proud or... angry..." He spoke in labored breaths quietly so that none but himself could hear him. He took one last look at the sun high above the stadium before closing his eyes and finally getting a well deserved rest.

A great silence followed the explosion and as the smoke cleared and Nathan was seen falling down off of the side of the arena with Zabar landing directly in the center of the circle, and the aura gauges adjusted, a cheer louder than any before in the year's tournament bracket erupted onto the scene. Celebratory ribbons and confetti fell down from the stands, drinks were toasted, names were cursed, bet money was taken and given, but most of all Vulco's voice boomed.
The crackle of the loudspeaker could be heard throughout the arena as it switched on. "AND THERRRRRRRRRRRRE WE HAVE IT LADIES AND GENTLEMEN! THE DEFINITIVE WINNER OF THE FORTIETH BIANNUAL VYTAL TOURNAMENT, FIRST YEAR BRACKET! THE VACUAN TAKES IT! THE ONLY VACUAN TAKES IT! A SAD DAY FOR VALE, BUT FOR THOSE HOME IN THE SANDY WASTELAND, A GREAT F ҉   ҉ KING DAY!" As his voiced filled the stadium, the arena below leveled itself out, returning to the plain flat circle it had started as, and began lowering back toward the ground floor where medical staff waited patiently.

Far below, just as Nathan was about to slam headfirst into the ground and snap his neck in two, a deep blue aura surrounded the boy and his descent began to gradually slow down. From up in the stands, surrounded by cheering and confetti, Fleetwood gave Graviton a side eye as he took a break from the celebration and focused his semblance into one fine point down below.

As Nathan fell, distracted big time by the stupidly large amount of pain coursing through his right forearm, he attempted to right himself into a position where Ergia could slow him down a bit. Just as he was about 2 meters off the floor and about to fire the thruster to the side in an attempt to save himself, his vision was filled with a deep blue hue, the aura of sorts surrounding the hand he still had in his line of sight. Almost immediately after, he felt himself gently decelerate, coming to a smooth stop on the floor.

As soon as the blue vanished, medical stuff surrounded him, checking him for any injuries. Somebody yelled to get the cool water, whilst another person shoved a flashlight's beam into his right eye. Taking a sitting position half-aided by some hands behind his back, he let out a surprised yell as his right arm started being rinsed with what was, undoubtedly, the cool water mentioned beforehand.

Somebody he'd never seen in his entire life kneeled down from the left and began talking. "Seems like you got a second-degree, partial burn on top of your right forearm. We're flushing it right now to stop the spread of the damage, but you'll probably have it wrapped in bandages for 2-3 weeks. It should heal fine by then.

Apart from that, you were damn lucky you landed the way you did. I don't know who or what did that - Vulco never mentioned that there was such a safety system - but if they hadn't, I'm not quite sure if we'd bother treating your burn."
