Preparing for the Coming Storm, Team One
« on: April 19, 2018, 01:52:59 AM »
The collected hunters and hunters in training are all sitting together in a massive hall, it’s comfortable enough despite how frigid it is outside and with several Atlas students not participating, or at least not participating now, walking around providing refreshments the place gave off a welcoming vibe despite its utilitarian design. As well as the hunters several scientists and teacher staff also walked between groups asking questions about their training exercises and how they overcame, or tried to overcome, these challenges. The walls were covered with screens showing some of the training sessions going on, battles with giant robots, grimm or other hunters each with their own rules on how to win. Paying close attention however it was clear, given by how many people were being taken out, that not every session was being played but most were none the wiser and cheered on these fights through the screens, talked to each other or prepared for their own encounter.

A loud bing marks from the announcement system precedes each combination and this time the announcer calls for Solaris Star and Lyssa Andromiko. A hush comes over the crowd, not only do many of the Atlas students recognise the name of an Atlas Specialist but this is also the first team of two to have been announced. A handful of the screens flicker on to the new stadium, it’s a barren concrete field, not dissimilar to the fighting arenas elsewhere in the world only this was massive, easily two hundred meters each side and probably closer to three. There was no obvious challenge on screen but that only made those watching on more excited. Guesses of what it could be; hunter was the most common guess, no one thought any captured Grimm or robot could stand up to an Atlas Specialist, particularly one with back up.

As Solaris and Lyssa made their way to the stadium the challenge was still nowhere to be seen, directed to wait in the middle of the stadium, it didn't take any special emphatic abilities to feel the anticipation coming off the helpers. Something big was about to happen.

Solaris couldn't help but wonder who she and Lyssa would be facing. It wasn't a stretch to think that Solaris would be versing one of her fellow Specialists or even some hunters looking to hone their skills against one who aligned with the Special forces of the militarized nation of Atlas. However, with backup she wondered who they would send, a few thoughts came to mind but mostly dismissed due to the fact that this was meant to test both of their skills in combat.

Glancing at Lyssa, Solaris thought it would be good just to make sure what being partnered with her would mean."You should probably stay back and assist when necessary, if anything they're going to bring someone to the field that is going to test me more then you. Anyone who you could fight with, I could decimate. Observe, think and then act when you see an opening. This is a learning experience, don't forget that." With Solaris at the center she unbutton her coat and took it off her shoulders for a moment, a mechanical bird-like creature's head appeared, before the birds wing popped up and it launched itself onto the highest point that it could.

Lyssa surveyed their wide open surroundings as Solaris ran the game plan by her. Staying away from the action and following the orders of a stranger were two things that she didn't usually enjoy, but this was a special case. It wasn't her place to try and argue with an Atlesian Specialist. Even if she did feel like her talents were being underestimated, it was hardly the time to complain. Having a position like that was an obvious indicator of talent, something she could respect. Not following the woman's instructions would only accomplish a swift loss for the two, and fighting alongside someone of such experience was definitely an opportunity she didn't want to waste. After all, a lot more could be learned here than her normal training, which usually was limited to picking fights with her own teammates.

"I know. I'll keep my distance," she answered calmly, her gaze still wandering around the stadium. Her hands moved to rest idly on both of her holstered revolvers, readying for the arrival of their target. Whatever it was that they would be fighting, she could only hope that she could shoot it. "Gimme a signal if you need a hand."

'I'd advise against that Specialist, coordination with others is a key part of what we are promoting here today. You won't always have Atlas forces nearby and you will find Lyssa is a plenty capable combatant.' A voice called out from above as Amarant, the Atlas headmaster, descended from the sky. Clad in his combat gear and with his long sword at his hip the old man looked strangely ready for combat considering Amarant had long left active service. 'Unfortunately those meant to challenge you injured themselves in one of the previous tests, unless you two want to wait for another obstacle I am willing to test you both. Of course this wasn't a pre-organised event so feel free to decline, it won't be held against either of you.' Amarant continued drawing his sword.

'If you both do decide to stay the challenge will be simple, you both simply need to leave this stadium. Other than that however if you have any questions feel free to ask otherwise tell me when you both are ready.' Amarant finished embedding his blade into the ground and stretching his three wings out behind him.

Before Amarant could speak, Solaris already knew his location thanks to EYES and had drawn her sword, she had taken a step back while her shield activated, the air around Solaris instantly felt hot as she got ready for action, "hmm, I'm up for the challenge." Solaris looked at Lyssa's guns, she had one idea that could work, however the fact that their opponent could fly made it troublesome to say the least, 'his wings are priority' Solaris thought and hoped Lyssa had the same idea.

Solaris activated her visor, covering her face as the hud activated and showed all of the data that the bird was transmitting, most important part was that Amarant appeared with an outline on himself and as would make it easier to track him despite his flight advantage. Normally Solaris was against relying on this tech, but, facing the current headmaster of Atlas, not to mention the former commander of the Atlesian Specialists was going to be a challenge. "Ironic that the human can fly and the bird faunus is grounded, isn't it?" Solaris said casually with her blade at the ready.

'Holy shit.'

That was all that went through Lyssa's mind for the first few moments after she realized who exactly they would be fighting. Suddenly, this was no longer just a somewhat special fight. For all she knew, she could never get another chance like this again. While she remained calm on the exterior, she couldn't help but wonder briefly if she was in over her head, a thought that rarely ever crossed her mind. However, even if she were to get absolutely stomped in this fight, it could still teach her a thing or two. She still intended to use every bit of her strength to keep that from happening.

Once he had finished talking, Lyssa glanced over at Solaris, the bird comment earning a quiet chuckle from her. "That's a shame, I was hoping I'd get to see you take off into the sky at some point." But really, what was the point of bird faunus if their wings were useless? Whatever, that wasn't very important at the moment. She drew one of her pistols, quickly swapping out the rounds in it for dust-infused ones that came from one of her vest's many pockets.

"We'll just have to bring him down here. If we can't, there won't be a whole lot I can do to assist. Let's see if ice does the trick." After finishing, she holstered it and repeated the process for the second revolver before finally redrawing the first. With both loaded guns held at her sides, she simply stared at their opponent, waiting for the match to begin.

The ground shock for a moment before the stadium started to descend, stopping after a few seconds with all those on the stadium now surrounded by fifty meter earthen walls. 'I'm sure research and development would be able to mock something up for you, although you might not be happy with that sacrifices required.' Amarant responded reclaiming his sword and started slowly walking towards the two. 'I take it that means no questions so lets see how 'up for this challenge' you actually are.' Amarant continues increasing his pace.

In an instant Amarant's three wings blazed alight as a mixture of fire and kinetic dust pulsed out and the old man was flung forward. Charging towards Lyssa, Amarant broke off just before contact and swapping the exhaust to ice dust hoping to in case the huntress in training in ice before landing and turning to face Solaris. Keeping up his quick pace Amarant lunged forward with a trio of quick slashes.

Right off the bat, Lyssa was forced to act defensively, her semblance activating to immediately form a protective barrier between her and his attack. While the blast of ice was mostly blocked, she felt an intense gust of freezing air blow past her on both sides, making it clear just how close she had been to becoming a popsicle. Not having much time to spare, she lifted both of her guns at Amarant the moment he turned to lunge at Solaris. Not wanting to stay close, she backed up slowly from both them and her cover while letting off four shots of ice aimed for Amarant's back.

Without warning the area around them started to burn with intense flames, Solaris releasing her semblance as her sword became encased in flames and her shield at the ready, Solaris used her shield to block two of the slashes as she used her sword to intercept the third strike and replied with a downward strike of her own. Bringing the flames to Amarant's back with the intent of trying to force the wings to overheat.

'You both fall back too quickly on your semblances. No matter how useful the tool, reliance upon it makes the tool a crutch.' Amarant remarked as he and Solaris crossed blades. 'Don't be afraid to take hits if it puts you in a better position, particularly while out numbering.' The headmaster continued as the first of Lyssa's shots hit home. Jumping up and using the mist created by Solaris melting his ice as cover while allow the rest of Lyssa's shots to cruise straight towards her ally as well as evading Solaris's counter attack. Landing behind Lyssa, keeping both opponents in front of him, Amarant continues his lightning quick but ultimately weak assault on his younger opponent, more to get a feel to how she responds that do actual damage, yet.

As the fight continued Amarant continued releasing small amounts of ice dust to be evapourated by Solaris's semblance, this quickly turned their underground box into a bit of a sauna, massively reducing sight range and soaking everyone considerably. There was also the sound of moving machinery coming from behind the fog, large clanking as something or lots of somethings move into place.

"Like your wings" Solaris retorted, her flames converging on her person as it started to wrap around her sword, the continuous building of fire caused the blade to appear blindingly bright to anyone without some form of eyewear.

Gripping her sword in both hands, Solaris charged in, her sword behind her as her visor stopped covering her eyes and the features of her armour turned off, her shield was raised forward as she went in for a strike with her blade. She went right past Amarant to get behind him and instead of attacking with her sword, used her shield, a blue pulse emitting from the shield as she struck her target to disable his flight gear to follow through with an upwards slash aimed at the wings to strike two of the three wings at once if she got lucky, one if she didn't.

Between the time it took for Lyssa to holster her guns and grab the rifle from her back, a good number of Amarant's swings made contact. The first few hits made her stumble back, him and his swift attacks easily taking advantage of her vulnerability. After firmly planting her boots on the ground, she eventually managed to block the rest of the assault, gripping her weapon with both hands to shield herself multiple times.

Solaris repositioning to be behind Amarant was, in her eyes, definitely the best way to go about grounding him. With how damp the air around them had suddenly become, her clothing was already wet and weighing her down. Lyssa was sure that she herself wouldn't be fast enough to take advantage of the opportunity and take out his wings. She could, however, do her best to keep him from evading her partner.

Ignoring his advice on the usage of her semblance, Lyssa activated it once again, forming two glowing barriers a few feet to the left and right of Amarant in an instant. Assuming her plan worked, avoiding Solaris' blow would require him to either shatter one of the shields or go through Lyssa. Aiming to prevent the latter, the tall woman activated the mechanism to shift her weapon to its glaive form. She gave three horizontal swipes at him with the blade the moment it emerged from the gun, focusing more on keeping him at a distance from her rather than striking him.

'I can assure you Specialist I've fought twice as many battles without my wings than you have in your entire carrier. And I feel there will be more to come' Amarant responded coldly. Seemingly drawn into Lyssa's bait the headmaster didn't respond as Solaris maneuvered her way behind him or when Lyssa set up her walls. It was only when Solaris made her move to charge did Amarant respond. Stretching out and encasing the Specialist in his wings Amarant not only let the attack go through but magnified the blow in return for keeping Solaris moving. Moving straight into Lyssa's glaive thrusts. Serious damage had been done to Amarant's suit and his aura levels were dropping quick as well. A loud crack sounded as the left most wing folded together, trying desperately to maintain cohesion while a spray tried to maintain the leaking dust. Amarant's suit seemed to resist his movements for a few moments however Solaris's emp didn't seem to have any serious impact.

Backing off into the thick fog as soon Amarant's departure was quickly filled as a series of pistons came shooting out of the fog. Huge chunks of metal easily 4 meters in diameter slammed into each other, if they didn't squish the huntresses, leading to a series of deafening booms throughout the underground arena. The pattern the pistons were moving in was simple enough, five squares of pistons in total each with 12 pistons, at any time the opposite sides of row 1,3,5 or 2,4 was slamming together or just retreating.

His sudden disappearance into the fog was enough of a red flag for her to be ready. While she expected some sort of swift attack, she was instead greeted by a flying mass of metal, barely diving and rolling out of the way in time. Her entire body shook as the pistons collided, her eardrums ringing from the loud booms. The pain was manageable, even if it did make it much harder to concentrate.

"How the fuck?" she muttered to herself, unable to hear her own voice. There really was no clear solution here, not one she could piece together. Maybe if she could take a moment to regroup with Solaris, though she couldn't even see her partner past the moving metal. This predicament only reminded her of how badly she needed to invest in some heavy duty explosives... Nothing like a big boom to solve all of your problems.

For now, all she could do was wait on the defensive. She had an idea that involved getting on top of one of those pistons to find the source, but she'd need her semblance to use as a platform, and that was currently recharging. And so, she waited, watching the fog closely while praying that her eardrums wouldn't be permanently screwed after standing near this set of crashing pistons for a while. Better here than wandering into the deep fog.

"There will always be more battles" Solaris said just before she saw the metal slamming together like a compacter, the Specialist backed away from the impending doom with a swift jump out of danger, she could only sigh at the pistons in disappointment. Her armour reactivated and connection to her robotic bird was established as the visor swiftly covered the huntresses face.

As the bird flew overhead it was having trouble tracking Solaris thanks in part to the mass amount of steam that covered the arena, the occasional outline popping up in her hud before disappearing again.

Solaris made use of the connection to the robotic bird, stepping back and gesturing a hand signal which was transmitted to the bird with her left hand. Shortly followed were several sounds of something breaching the large metal pistons before several loud explosions were heard, Soalris hoped the damage was enough to stop the pistons and hopefully also serve to disperse some of the steam.
