A Voyage Home (Closed)
« on: October 19, 2017, 12:48:44 PM »
One afternoon, after she had finished her classes, Lady Blair was greeted in the library by a man in a cloak bearing her family's crest. Approaching cautiously, she greeted the man. After a long conversation, the man handed her a letter sealed with the crest. He then took his leave. Immediately, Blair opened the letter and fell to her knees after she read it. Her father was ill and she needed to return for a couple weeks. She sent a message to her teachers and tried to find people to travel with her. Eventually, she got five others to travel with her. She waited for them in the courtyard of the school.

One of the benefits of travelling without her team was that it gave Saffron a lot of freedom with how to spend her time. This combined with being the only senior student part of the Atlas delegation let her learn under several of the greatest teachers Beacon had to offer as well as interact regularly with the students. Although it was a useful exercise Saffron found that she missed the more formal environment of her home but still the weeks taught her valuable lessons as well as forming connections with everyone involved. Still Saffron was surprised when Blair asked her to accompany the former home because her father was ill. Always ready for adventure Saffron lept at the opportunity to assist Blair getting home. Reloading with dust Saffron once again shook her head at the comparatively lax security then quickly head down to the courtyard.

Wearing a yellow sari with red runes Saffron made her way gracefully down to Blair dragging her luggage behind her. Coming face to face with the Lady of Felwinter Saffron smiled softly. 'I'm so sorry to hear about your father, but I'm sure he'll be better by the time we make it all the north.' Saffron began sympathetically. Setting down her luggage Saffron positioned herself next to Blair as they waited for the rest of the crew to show up. 'I'm sure you have lots of friends you can talk to but sometimes it is easier with a stranger and I want to make sure you know you can talk to me anytime.' Saffron continued quietly to make sure they weren't overheard.

Saffron was lucky in that she had never had to deal with personal loss yet and knew she would be devastated if anything happened to her own father. Still she equally understood the value of talking and would do anything she could to help this young girl through a troubled time.

It'd been far too long since Anton had a chance to go on a proper trip somewhere that wasn't some political machination of his parents or a mission for the Academy, and Anton couldn't deny that he was thrilled at the prospect. Certainly there would be some manner of combat involved, he had been hired as an escort, but the goal was reaching Felwinter, not the destruction of a nest of Grimm, so it wouldn't be so strenuous a trip as it could be, which Anton was rather thankful for. Nothing ruined a scenic mountain holiday more than Grimm trying to murder you.

As for why he'd been chosen to join Lady Felwinter on her journey, Anton couldn't say. Perhaps it was to do with his name and nothing more, some political ploy he hadn't been informed of. Or there was simply no one else available at the time. Either way, Anton was going to aid Lady Felwinter as best he could, however he could.

With a suitcase full of spare clothes and Dust trailing behind him, Anton strolled up to Blair and Saffron, extending his hand to each of them in turn. "Lady Felwinter, it's a pleasure to make your acquaintance, though I do wish it were under brighter circumstances. While I'm sure you're already aware, I'm here if you require anything. Don't hesitate to ask", he gently murmured to Blair, before smiling warmly at Saffron. "This offer also extends to you, Miss...?"

Most extracurricular missions Diana heard of went in one ear and out the other, she just wasn’t someone to seek conflict, however the mission to Felwinter was different. No matter how much she tried to put it away it kept sneaking back into her head. It wasn’t search and destroy, they weren’t there to clear Grimm as exterminators but to to help someone get back home, home to their family and a father who was ill. For someone as close to their family as Diana this certainly tore at her heartstrings. On the same note it would mean a trip back to Atlas, once the mission was done she could pay for her own trip back to Beacon a few days later and spend some time back home. It was a perfect storm of reasons for Diana to join the voyage, there really was no way she could pass it up.

Having packed the essentials ranging from clothing to ammunition into a hiking backpack she replaced the ice packs in her first aid kit with heating pads, and picked up a small jewellery box before heading out. Once in the courtyard she recognised her fellow first year but hesitated to approach as she was already in conversation with a someone else. Unfamiliar with tall girl she worried that jumping inn on the conversation wouldn’t make the best first impression, so she hovered at a respectable distance. That was until Anton approached. She waited for him to make his introductions and then went over before the conversation started again proper.

Diana didn’t really know either of the first years other than their names “Heya Blair, Anton. You guys alright?” she quickly gave an apologetic expression towards Blair ”I’m sure he’ll have improved, and with a team like this we’ll be there in no time.” she gave her most empathetic smile before adding ”We're all here for you.” She plopped her backpack on the ground before truing to the unknown girl "Um, Hi. We haven't met, I think?" she waited a fraction too long before reaching out her hand and adding "I'm Diana".

Sandy was unsure why he had been accepted for a mission in any sort of mountain environment. Especially since the leader was a fourth year but he also didn't care much. He was more than happy to help out. Even if her introduction sounded a bit pompous I probably shouldn't mention that part when I meet this woman. At least not until I know she is the relaxed type. These thoughts raced through Sandy's head as he ran through the halls of Beacon with his small suitcase in tow. Almost colliding with another student as he ran to meet up with his other traveling companions. When he arrived he saw that most of them had arrived already and were engaging in conversation. So as not to interrupt he simply waited quietly but within open view.

Acero was both groggy and somewhat excited as he walked out of his dorm towards the courtyard. He was gonna go back to his home country of Atlas for the second time this year after getting his extensive surgery. The cyborg wondered if he'd be able to visit his godmother while he was there--or at least send her a nice letter-- as he ordered a couple of protein and vitamin shakes from the vending machines. As he reached the courtyard, he disposed of his trash in a waste bin and saw that some of the other students that signed up for the job had already shown up, although, he was the eldest among them as usual.

The 4th year put his armored helmet on before he approached the Wolf Faunus, Lady Blair Valka, and said, "Hello there Ms. Valka, I'm Acero Walker of Team SARK. I'm sorry to hear about your father's illness, I truly am.  When shall we depart on our journey?"

Having everyone arrive brought a bit of ease to Blair. While she needed to act calm and collected, there was a large urge to just break down and cry. She would normally let these emotions out but, as of this time, she needed a level head to be able to lead this party. She felt a tear roll down her cheek, wiped it away and cleared her throat. "Thank you all for coming. I would not have expected any of you to show up since this is a family issue but I do appreciate it. Having you all here eases my pain. Now, onto the matter at hand. In order to get the my village, we will need to take a shuttle from here to Atlas, then we will ride on horse back once we reach the mountain. The road is treacherous, not even most Grimm can handle it, so if you want to back out now I don't blame you. There are a couple things you must know about Felwinter before we arrive. While it will look like a primitive area, we chose to keep it that way. We would rather focus on our people then on comfort and modern convenience. That does not mean we don't have what is needed out here. We just have the bare minimum. As such, once we arrive, our scrolls will not always work, which is why I have asked my dear friend Arvid to provide us with radios and ear pieces to use once we land in Atlas. Any questions before we depart?" She explained. She looked off to the distance and could see their shuttle arriving. She smiled and threw her axe onto her back. With the axe on her back and the amount of armor she wore, most would think that her stature and physique could not handle it. None of that was seen that day.

Saffron wasn't surprised to have become a bit of the centre of attention, being a bit an outsider although not the normal reason given the amount of Faunus present. Matching Anton's smile with a wide one of her own and taking Diana's hand, squeezing only lightly after noticing the girl's hesitation, Saffron started to introduce herself as she could see the last member of their expedition coming down the stairs. 'My name is Saffron de Cortez, I'm a student from Atlas so that would be why you haven't seen me around Beacon. But I came over for the Switcheroo sparing matches and met Blair.' Saffron introduced herself with all the warmth in the world becoming a little protective of the first years gathering around even as another older student closed in.

That of course didn't stop her having a little fun and responded quickly to Anton's perhaps overly generous offer. 'Are you sure... Anton right?' Saffron began taking the hint from Diana's introduction. 'I can think of some pretty intensive requests.' Saffron finished her jest with a small chuckle before looking back up to the final additions to their party. Seeing Sandy wasn't going to speak up Saffron gestured to the lithe boy. 'How about you? At least give us a name unless you want us to make one up for you.' Saffron continued her playful taunting with a bright smile to ensure everyone knew she meant no harm.

Saffron probably knew the most, except for Blair, about the people who called Felwinter home, studying in Atlas would have a focus on their local history and geography like anywhere else. She personally didn't agree with their survivalist life style and felt that encouraging such dangerous behaviour would only leave to more suffering long term and tradition would trap many who wanted to leave. Still Saffron had enough good sense not to mention this and instead nodded along as Blair spoke leaning in closer to comfort the younger girl as she saw a tear run down her cheek. 'That far north the weather is as deadly as the Grimm so do we know the forecasts? Expecting any blizzards or heavy snow fall? What about you southerners got enough clothes for true cold?' Saffron asked getting more serious although she still put on a mocking accent around the word 'southerners' from a pretty common TV series. Got to try to keep everyone's spirits up here, moral is 50% of the war after all. Saffron thought to herself repeating Atlas maxims internally as she sat back and watched Blair draw her impressively sized weapon nodding in approval.

"Perhaps I might even oblige these requests, Saffron. We will have to see what happens on the road", Anton smirked back at Saffron, letting his semblance kick into gear, just to see how she'd react more so than anything. While he waited for everyone to complete their introductions, he took the opportunity to extend his hand to everyone who had arrived later than himself. They seemed a good group, even if he had only really heard about them through the grapevine, Sandy and Acero moreso than Diana or Blair, thanks to that little mishap during a sparring match.

Having taken the opportunity to size everyone up a bit, Anton turned back to Blair. "Yes, actually, I did. My knowledge of the area isn't as good as I wish it was, so I was curious as to how long we would be utilising the aforementioned horses?", he smiled warmly as he spoke. It was less that he was concerned about the temperature, being from Atlas, than he was about the horses themselves. One's first time riding a horse was probably not supposed to be up a mountain. Besides, if the trip proved fruitful, Anton's father may be interested in Felwinter, so a good report would be necessary.

Sandy's ears drooped when the switcheroo sparring matches were mentioned. His mind was immediately filled with images of some wolf guy losing his mind on his opponent and more personally the student who was almost killed by all of the grenades he was carrying going off at once. Sandy's grenades. Even worse that student was here. Right in front of him. He was pulled out of his thoughts when someone spoke to him and he snapped towards them. She was the same student who mentioned the sparring matches and quickly hoped she at the very least hadn't well remembered how soundly his opponent had thrashed him. "Sandy. My name is Sandy." Sandy failed utterly in his attempt to hide his discomfort when he spoke. At the very least the conversation had turned away from the matches though. "Probably not." Sandy admitted in response to Saffron's question about clothes. "I'm still having trouble adapting to the cold here. Atlas will probably be a nightmare. I have the warmest stuff I own though."

Whilst Blair was the only person shorter than Diana she still seemed far more imposing than her, just the weight of that axe and the armor she wore. Looking over the rest of them Diana was quite pleased to see that someone as experienced as Acero was joining them, not that she knew him personally in the slightest. As for Anton, he was just suave. She couldn't quite place her finger on what it was about him, she was certainly envious at the ease at which he was bantering with the woman from Atlas. As Sandy was the only one who had yet to speak up she wondered if she should talk to him, could maybe ask his name or something. Before she could say anything however their last member beat her to it. Saffron de Cortez, she was cracking jokes, broke the ice with Sandy, going over details of the plan, clearly knew the dangers of the Atlas climate. There was no getting around it Saffron was just oozing with leadership and Diana hung on her every word.

The discomfort in Sandys' voice as he finally spoke was palpable, although she didn't know the specifics she could guess that it had to be from those horrible Switcheroo fights. "Well It'll be a fair amount colder yeah, but I've got some heating pads you could borrow. I'm sure we'll figure something out" she decided against giving a proper description of how Vale seemed tropical compared to Atlas and briefly wondered if Sandy might fit in her brothers' clothes, although the height difference made that seem improbable.

Turning back to Saffron she added "I've never been as far north as Felwinter but I grew up in Mantle so I'm set for the cold." Diana kept looking at Saffron but with the slightly vaccent expression of someone trying to remember something. She had only been at Atlas proper for a few months before dropping out but Saffron had such a unique appearance that she felt sure she had seen her before.

I'm terribly sorry for delaying the thread a few days, unfortunately got rather sick and wasn't able to get someone to cover my work. But on vacation now so have better time.

Acero's head turned to look at Sandy as soon as he heard the name, recognizing it from the Switcheroo sparring matches where his accident took place. He took a deep breath in and sighed as he walked over to the young Alsatian Faunus, putting his non-cybernetic arm on his shoulder to quickly say, "Hey, uh, sorry that your weapons got blasted to pieces when I used them in the sparring session. Though, I suggest you get a more secure container for them in the near future, before you end up looking like a piece of modern art like me."

The cyborg gave Sandy a few quick pats on the shoulder before he walked over towards Blair, standing in front of her and crossing his arms. "Would you like me to do anything specific on this mission, or am I just here for when things get really bad?" Acero said in a serious, yet somewhat warm tone to Blair, expecting to just be along for extra muscle.

Blair let out a small sigh as everyone got to know each other. She smiled then walked over to Diana. "We are all here because I asked you all to be here. Acero, I asked you here because I know you can hold your own." She looked over the weird group that had answered her call. Placing her hand on Diana's shoulder, she gave a look to the horizon and turned her gaze down. "Father, I'm coming home." She said softly. Almost forgetting that Diana was next to her, Blair moved her arm around Diana and almost brought them shoulder to shoulder but quickly stopped as she realized what was about to happen. She removed her arm and was about to say something when the shuttle touched down. As the boarding door opened, a man in a suit stepped out. "Lady Blair, I take it? I am Marcus Erikson. I am representing your estate. It was the village's wish." The man bowed as he walked out. Blair walked over to the man and placed her axe against the side of the shuttle. "I don't know why my father would ask for a lawyer. I'll give you a chance but should anything happen to this party or my village while your are around, you will feel a winter's wrath." She picked up her axe and turned back to the group. "Well, I guess we are leaving. Diana, Acero, a word before you two board. I need both of you to keep an eye on him. If he does anything out of the ordinary, inform me. Acero, head into the ship. Diana, one more thing, about what happened just before he arrived, I did not mean anything by it. Sorry." She blushed as she finished the conversation then walked toward the ship, placing her helmet on.

OK the mood shifted quickly making all of Saffron's attempts to keep everyone in as high spirits as possible fade away under the reality of the situation. This Marcus Erikson definitely didn't help things and Blair clearly wasn't happy to see him, she had no idea 'Winter's Warth' would entail but Saffron wasn't in a rush to find out and started to make her way into the shuttle. Before she did so however Saffron spent a little time chatting with the other members of this protective detail. 'Well then let's start with something small Anton, how about taking care of the luggage. There are a few things I want to mention to the pilot.' Saffron remarked and then started to head into the shuttle before noticing Diana was staring at her with an odd expression.

Not exactly a new experience for Saffron but one she hadn't experienced while in Beacon. Reading the expression wrong Saffron responded through practised icy calm. 'Well I brought some spare fire dust so we can whip up something if the cold starts bothering you too much.' Paying Diana the barest amount of courtesy to not seem impolite Saffron smiled widely at everyone else and went inside the craft. Heading straight through the passenger area for the cockpit Saffron immediately started to brighten up, she loved flying craft of all types and there is something calming about the flashing lights and walls of switches once you know what they all mean.

After starting with some small talk Saffron would hope to turn the conversation towards how Felwinter was faring. Atlas had provided her with general geographical information about the surrounding tribes But Saffron knew to take anything Atlas taught about Faunus with a sizeable serving of salt so was eager to information and as Blair seemed otherwise occupied and screw lawyers the pilot was the last option. In return Saffron offered to use her position in Atlas assure any custom ships that they had already been checked and where on a high priority mission.

"Of course, go right ahead", Anton hummed as he slipped his cane under his arm and picked up both of their luggage, and with everyone either wrapped up in their own conversations or heading there too, followed Saffron to the airship, bypassing Erikson with only a simple nod of recognition. Lawyers were tolerable only when you were paying them directly, Anton had found, and even then they were second only to politicians in terms of how utterly repulsive they could be.

Settling Saffron's luggage into place, Anton took the seat opposite, resting his cane between his legs. With warmer apparel left in the top of his suitcase, he felt comfortable remaining in his dark suit for the time being. He'd only brought enough clothes for a few days, so he hoped that the village had a good dry cleaner. Before that, though, would be a long flight, so Anton settled back into his seat, ready to banter with his fellows. He also planned to keep an eye on Blair during the trip, in case anything or anyone upset her. It always paid to stay in the leader's good books, after all.
