Recovery(Open)

It had been a few weeks after the Switcheroo fights in which, amongst other things, Calen was beaten to a bloodied pulp. It took serveral operations for all the bone fragments to be retrieved from inside his chest and reconstruct his ribs and knee. Finally Calen was going to start the long and painful process of physical rehabilitation. Aura and Diana's assistance rapidly increased his healing he would need to start moving soon to ensure everything healed where it's supposed to. It would be pure agony but what was truly irritating Calen was the hospital food. Having far more choice words for the bland and unappetising food than the relentless surgeries Calen had already managed to get himself quite the reputation among the hospital staff.

The nurses had left after a particularly bad morning session from Calen finishing with him being moved to the recovery section. Any pretence or mask of control had long since shattered leaving a hurt and bitter boy. He knew it wasn't their fault, it was only his own, but it still felt so good to rage self-righteously even if everyone knew how empty his words were. Taking a few deep breaths Calen settled himself into his routine. Playing back the fight with Gray Calen carefully analysed his mistakes mistakes in the fight and hypothesised solutions. After finding the same as the last 26 times he did this exercise Calen started on his school work. Weeks of being unable to attend classes would have normally put a student behind but for Calen working independently meant he could finally stretch him mental legs. Full months ahead of prescribed content Calen simply kept pushing forward because there was nothing else to do.

Well. Calen thought to himself wriggling his toes. If I'm supposed to start physical recovery might as well start walking. As such Calen swung his body round, knocking his school materials all over the place, and gingerly placed his feat on the ground. The infuriating pins and needles which had been plaguing him since the fight started to fade as his naked feet touched the cold floor. Taking confidence Calen stood, placing all his weight on his good leg, and besides a little light headedness he was fine. All was going well until Calen put any weight on the limb. Pain shot through his leg causing Calen to almost buckle on to the ground. Instead taking in another few deep breathes as he collapsed back on the bed.

Desperately trying to hold his screams in Calen tried to distract himself by looking at the other patients in the recovery ward. Beacon didn't get as many injured as Calen had expected but there was always a few around and more out getting tests. Whatever state Calen was in there was no way he was going to be screaming in pain in front of other unless a limb was being removed. Settling down Calen hid his now throbbing knee under the covers and retrieved the closest text book. Mentally preparing himself for the earful his physiotherapist when they saw the results of that stunt.

Throwing the book away, only narrowly missing one of the other beds, Calen called out 'So what do you guys do for run around here? Are there weekly dances? or maybe movie nights?' Sarcasm dripped off Calen's words as he searched for someone to vent against before his thoughts had too much time with him on their own.

Acero walked through the door with all of his new prosthetic limbs attached, a crutch supporting the left side of his body, a doctor making sure he was alright as he walked to a clean hospital bed. As the robotic fourth year sat down in the bed, the doctor explained that they were going to run some tests on the new prosthetic attachments in a few hours, while an engineer scanned the new parts, making sure they were in working order. Acero sighed heavily and grabbed a nearby newspaper published by the school. It had tabloids, advertisements, a teacher of the month section, a cartoon strip, and the classic crossword puzzle.

Serin has been in the hospital wing of the school for a couple days due to a very stupid dare that he has accepted, and of course, the outcome was a break on his left leg. Because of this, he had been forced to stay in bed for at least a couple days before the nurses would let him go and use crutches to move around not trusting someone that jumped out a window not to do something stupid in these crucial early days of healing. Being stuck in bed was not the most entertaining thing in the world so most people so Serin has to find ways of entertaining himself, that day it had been doing the maintenance on his arm. It was in the middle of checking the blade deployment system when a rogue textbook flew towards his head and his reflexes flung his arm in a defensive position on his face as the book narrowly missed him.

"Try and dodge flying textbooks make up a good percentage of my time." He said picking up the book and neatly putting it on his table before turning towards the source, finding a fellow first year as the culprit. Seriously he could have looked or something, nearly sliced that thing in half." He turned himself to look at the guy to see what he's about. "If you were here the other day we have smores and told spooky stories, just missed it. Other nights we just gossip."He looked over the man, taking notice of his intense injuries, "The hell happened to you? Did you fight a horde of grim or something?"

"No, he just went off and pissed another student off so much that they decided to kick Calen's ass into oblivion." Setsuna commented, stepping into the room. He'd only been told of Calen's injuries and how he got them, not having been part of the Switcheroo battles himself, so out of concern, he had decided to visit his teammate when he had the spare time. "But what did I expect. This is Calen Shrike I'm talking to." Stepping over to Calen's bed and glancing over his injured body--ribs, knee and all--he felt a pang of sympathy. "Anything I can get you? Food, water?" Turning to look at the other injured person, he realised something. "Oh, we haven't met. I'm Setsuna Antiqua, leader of Team ASTC--and also his teammate."

Kei's mouth dropped open in shock. The body of Acero, normally familiar despite the artificial prosthetics, now half-mechanised, was a completely different sight to behold. He hadn't been told the extent of Acero's injuries, only that he'd been admitted to the hospital ward, so of course he came over to inquire. What he didn't expect was...well...this. "Dust above, Acero," he asked. "What happened to you?"

I'll give you something to fucking dodge Calen yelled internally as his hand shot behind him where his knives where normally stored. They of course weren't there and with no real way of expressing himself physically Calen fell back on the tried and true method of taunts which had never lead him wrong before. 'I cut myself shaving.' Calen replied not quite able to hide all the pain in his voice with flippancy before Setsuna entered the room. The gaunt boy then turned his eyes back to another book in a vain attempt to distract himself from the pain. 'What do you gossip about anyway? Who asked the stupidest question? Because I'm pretty sure you are a shoe in for tonight's old lady knitting circle. Anyway...' Calen was going to continue but the arrival of his team mate and realising he had torn a stitch on his chest stopped him. A familiar face did a lot to calm Calen's pointless and directionless rage but it was still simmering just beneath the surface.

Shifting his body to hide the now bleeding stitch Calen gave Setsuna an almost apologetic look as his leader explained what really happened. 'I'm glad we are finally getting to know each other, it only took two near death experiences, but progress is progress no matter how slow or small.' Calen replied to his leader sourly. 'And I'm fine.....I appreciate the concern.' Calen continued with at least the mask of his manners slowly repairing itself.

Acero Calen thought to himself as another figure walked into the recovery room. He couldn't place a face to that name but it did cause him to study the robotic student far closer. Man I'd rather die than have them put that much metal inside me, you could never be you again.' Calen thought to himself before Acero's face finally clicked. Overcome with a sudden bout of laughter Calen twisted and turned in his bed, only barely managing to to squeeze out. 'Master Toaster, I see you've gotten a few upgrades.' Between heavy breaths and loud laughter. The rapid breathing and thrashing in his bed was agony but was a good pain, a sharp pain which kept the mind focused rather than a dull ache which tempted you into oblivion.

Acero sighed and put the magazine down before he looked at Kei and said, "I was sparring with a first year during those 'use a different weapon' exercises, when suddenly he shot a bag of grenades that was on my hip, causing an explosion that sent me flying and scarred. But, it definitely wasn't as bad as when the Grimm tore me up. What's up with you and the team?" The cyborg heard Calen's remarks but decided to ignore him for now.

Serin looked between Calen and Acero taking in the magnitude of their injuries.Well dang, now my stunt seems even dumber than before, regardless that doesn't give him the right to be so rude. He thought as he did a little hello hand wave to the newly introduced Setsuna."I'm Serin, nice to meet ya He said politely, shrugging off Calens inflammatory comment assuming he's just angry from all the pain his injuries were giving him. Serin quickly flipped through the textbook that Calen had thrown seeing if it was damaged before grabbing some crutches that were near his bed. With a couple of unsure hobbles, Serin managed to make his way over to Calen to Calen and Setsuna, dropping the book off neatly on his night stand. "I'm surprised someone would do this to you, you seem like a likable guy. Regardless that really sucks" He said while looking at Acero in his peripheral. Damn that guy got messed up. Wonder what mods he's added to that armor.

Calen huffed with no one taking his baits there was nothing to distract him from all the pain he was in. After remaining sullen for a few moments Calen once again tried to get out of bed. Keeping all his weight on his good leg Calen slowly made his way over to another bed where a sleeping student lay. Taro Espada had been catatonic since their initiation months ago and he still hadn't woken up. The doctors had ran out of treatments so they decided that perhaps being exposed to the ambient noise might lure him out of his slumber. Taro had been injured during their initiation so they hadn't known each other long but he was still Calen's responsibility as a team mate. Sitting on the comatose boy's bed Calen looked back at Serin. 'It's the face, a visage only a mother could love. It makes people feel sorry for me.' Calen grinned, an empty expression but it felt better than staying silent.

Taking Taro's hand in his own Calen took a few deep breaths, being up and about had made it pretty obvious that he was bleeding but it didn't slow him down too much. 'Creepy stories huh?' Calen began as if the intervening conversation never happened. 'Well I've got one. It's about this man, family man, hard working, gives to charity blah blah blah. Well he is out walking his daughter one day and there is an accident, a truck diver falls asleep at the wheel and his foot presses hard on the accelerator hitting both the man and his daughter. The daughter doesn't make it and the man loses his right arm. Very tragic, huge out poring of grief again blah blah blah. Now the mother takes this very badly and goes into a deep depression, psychologists say that it's because she never had a chance to say good bye and as such can never truly move on. Now the man has been holding up, he has to because his wife and other children need him. He is getting used to life with one arm, luckily his job can be done by a man with one arm, balance, phantom limb, having to learn to write with his left hand that sort of thing. And the man comes up with a plan to truly say goodbye, it is the daughters birthday coming up and maybe if they celebrate once more everyone can move on.

The mother loves the idea, the first time since the accident she smiles and throws herself into the preparation. Of course no birthday is complete without a birthday card and everyone in the family writes their name and a little message on the card. The man is still having trouble writing so his wife helps him, holding his hand in her own but no matter what the man can't seem to write his daughter's name legibly. Every time he starts the word something pulls at his arm, but not his left arm, his phantom arm. This continues for a few days and they get around it by typing it out on a computer still the man feels off and decides to confess it to his wife. His wife doesn't think anything of it, too busy planning the rest of the party but family life starts to take a turn for the strange.

The children brighten up and are acting almost as if the daughter never died, calling out her name as they run playing tag, fighting monsters or whatever children do. The psychologists say it's normal and that it will fade in time and they should just focus on the party. So they do. Everyone is so busy that the man doesn't have anyone to talk to about the tugging on his arm getting stronger and stronger. He thinks it must be his mind playing tricks on him until one day when he comes home from work he so exhausted that he forgets he has lost an arm and tries to close the door with his right hand. Smiling slightly to himself at the silly mistake his expression is shattered as the door slams shut and faint laughter can be heard, this daughters laughter. Rushing to his wife in a barely contained state of panic the man tells her about the door but his wife already knows. 'I know. I've been speaking to her. It's OK she wants this.' she says and then she explains all the little things she has seen her daughter do since she has died. Confused the man dumbly follows his wife to bed as she tries to comfort him 'The party is in the morning. It's only for one more day.'

Morning comes and the man awakes with the faces of his family all around him. Their cold lifeless eyes looking at him while their faces twisted in unimaginable agony. The man tries the scream but he can't, a hand is around his throat chocking his cries. He can't see his attacker but the man is strong, he wrestles to his feet and looks around for whoever did this. But the room is empty. The phantom limb sensations again start as the man grows weaker it's wet, covered in a thick syrupy liquid but most strangely it feels like he is holding something, something fleshy. And just as he loses consciousness the man hears the laughter again but it changes no longer is it his daughter's, it's darker more menacing and it's voice booms into the man's fading senses. 'I didn't want to say goodbye, now we can be together forever'
Calen finishes with as much of a bow as his seated position and stitches allow before smiling at everyone present, spending more time on Acero than anyone else.

Setsuna shuddered both mentally and physically. Just listening to that story made him wonder what kind of person Calen truly was. "Calen..." he started, reaching for his teammate, but dropping his hand short before physical contact, instead turning his gaze to an old partner.

Taro Espada. Possibly, if it wasn't for him, it might have been Calen in that position, still unconscious. Instead, his sacrifice allowed the remaining members of their team to carry out their initiation successfully. Even now Setsuna still felt pangs of guilt whenever he thought of that incident. The only thing he could do now was to wait for him to wake. He owed Taro that much, at least.

Leaning over to Calen he whispered "Congratulations Calen, you just made everyone in the room incredibly creeped out both at you and maybe me. Happy?"

That first year really needed to see a psychologist after getting out of bed. Maybe the beating he got twisted his mind in some way. Kei couldn't see any person in Mistral acting the way that guy did. Clearing his mind of the horror story he returned his attention to Acero, not before giving Calen a side derogatory look.

"Nothing much going on right now. We can't go on missions because Savas's gone somewhere AWOL and you're...well...in here. One good thing in this mess is that you seem to have gotten upgrades to your current equipment, which will definitely come in handy. Also," he added, "It seems like you've had a run-in with that first year calling you a "toaster". I don't know where that comes from, but I can do something about that if you want." Coming from him, it was slightly uncharacteristic, but he'd been changing since he joined his team. Maybe his own psychologist was right after all.

Serin stared at Calen in horror as he listened to the story, it was truly scary that much was for sure. "Not sure Im going to be able to top that one, seems like you win the trophy for tonight."He stared off into space for a moment recomposing himself. He turned to look at Taro,"Is this how he always is?"

Acero gave Kei a puzzled look before switching his gaze back and forth from his friend and Calen. After a few seconds of head turning, Acero looked at Kei and said "Ah, that's Calen. Don't mind him, he pokes fun at everyone he meets, big or small, strong or weak."

The cyborg then looked over to the gaunt and injured first year, saying "Let me guess, you made some dumbass remark during a fight and got your ass handed to you?"

Looking back at Kei, Acero then said with a confused voice and face, "What do you mean Savas went AWOL? Where's Ribeiro then?"

Honestly Calen was hurting too much to keep up his flippant persona for much longer so he decided to calm down a bit at least for now. 'They said creepy stories.' Calen responded to his leader slightly indignantly. 'Anyway more people should be creeped out by you, you are too nice Master Setsuna. It's not natural.' Calen was smiling but looking off into a corner, lost in thought.

Jostled out of his little daze by Serin's question Calen gave a quick glance at Setsuna before replying. 'He was injured in our initiation, hasn't regained conciousness since a few months ago....I hope I didn't give him nightmares.... Do people dream in comas?

Calen was quite pleased to have left an impressing on the older student and a little more spirit entered him as a result. 'Well I first tried to say something smart but he didn't get it, you have to adapt to your audience as I'm sure your team mate knows.' Calen remarked his smile getting more genuine. 'Anyway I figured out his semblance so next time he won't stand a chance.'

Still disturbed by the creepy story Calen had conjured up, Setsuna managed to get off a clearly distracted "I try my best.", eyes only focused on Taro. "Hopefully he isn't listening right now, I've heard of people in comas being able to hear but not respond. In which case you have given him nightmares for a lifetime." He then turned to look at Serin. "Worst case scenario...maybe. We can't operate as a 3-man team, so it's in everyone's hopes that he recovers soon. Only time will tell."

Kei simply nodded agreeingly at Calen's words. "Wordplay is a very effective weapon against an emotional opponent, it is true. Some might call it disrespectful. However, in this Grimm-eat-man world, you have to do anything to survive. Watch that confidence, boy," he added as an afterthought. "While it is good in the short term, it will make you eat your words one day."

His message brought across, he returned his attention to Acero. "Ribeiro is around campus, but you know what she is like. I cannot really get her to talk to me, nor...do I really want to talk in general either. The situation still stands as is. We cannot deploy with two members down."

Acero nodded at Kei with a heavy sigh before he said, "Well, that kind of sucks. I hope they're both doing well for themselves, wherever they are right now.

The cyborg then looked over to Calen and said, "Yeah, because trash talk is so smart right? Sometimes even when you know a person, they'll still surprise you, might even kill you."

"Far as I figure there's only one way to figure out if you dream in a coma, and that's be put in one." He looked over to Calen,"Your already halfway there so a little more and we can test it." Serin then turned his attention to the half-robot guy realizing he hasn't introduced himself yet. "Hey, Acero isn't it? I'm fairly sure I've seen you around campus before. I'm Serin." He said examining the highly impressive looking robotic parts that were ingrained inside of him.
