A Little Old School Maritime Robbery [Closed]
« on: August 01, 2017, 08:11:50 PM »
As it turns out, the old adage about finding true peace at sea was fairly spot on. At least in Michael's case. He was on the final hours of the voyage back to Vale by boat. One of the Vaktar Corporation's cargo boats, to be specific. Michael personally oversaw the transport of several amounts of cargo on the vessel, including a prized set of Port Belusia rum. Port Belusia had been forced out of business around the time of the Greyed War, and the remaining supply was highly valuable. So with a prize that grand and the opportunity to get away from his family early, Michael jumped on the opportunity to safeguard this shipment.

The sun was shining, the wind was blowing wonderfully, and the ship was piloting itself. And it could, these Vaktar Corporation ships are highly advanced. And most of the ship was automated, with only a scant few human workers. The majority of the crew on an average voyage would be the security team, which consisted of only Michael at the time. The rest of the team was sleeping in their rooms in preparation for another long day of not doing much. Nobody was dumb enough to try and take on the automated weapon systems and highly-trained security teams of the Vaktar Corporation.

  S C E N E ~ M U S I C
The Pirates Are Back
by Maurice Lessing

Life is full of big things. Things like a thousand foot long cargo ship, or the vast, seemingly eternal sapphire-blue seas it floated upon. But, as anyone can attest, it is sometimes the little things that can matter the most . . . little things like football-sized robots, bobbling just below the waves, directly in the path of a certain ship.

Cordell tracked the entire operation on the glowing displays of her airship's cockpit, a long green rectangle representing the cargo ship inching ever closer to the tiny orange dots that stood in for her improvised troublemakers. So far, everything was going according to plan. The freighter was exactly where her source, a drunk-as-a-skunk private security moron, had said it would be. It was a fairly high end Vaktar ship -- top-dollar autopilot, a quality radar / sonar package, and sufficient guns tracking the sky and the sea to cut down most Grimm without a whole lot of trouble. It was the kind of ship that a big name business could feel safe putting their precious cargo on... and it was that much-vaunted sense of safety, along with the desire to cut down on payroll, that left it most exposed.

"All units have reached suitable distance from the ship, captain."

Cordell smiled at her digital first mate's update. "About time -- was gettin' bored off me arse up here. Have 'em go in, nice an' slow like."

Receiving a low-frequency ping from a floating transponder buoy a mile or so off, the half-dozen drifting robots suddenly came alive. They were simple machines: a tiny electric outboard motor, a GPS tag, four spider-like limbs with electromagnets on the feet, remote control functions as basic as a toy helicopter, waterproofing, and that was it. Effectively, each was a home made drone built to do three things: float, climb a cargo ship's outer hull... and, upon reaching a specific point on the hull, detonate a small Dust-powered EMP charge tucked in amidst its circuitry. Single use and disposable? Unfortunately, yes. Effective? Well... that all depended on how good the blueprints Cordell had bought off the CCT dark net turned out to be.

Seconds ticked by, then minutes. All Cordell could see for certain was that the green rectangle now had a bad case of orange dots around its edges; Delahaye was in the driver's seat for this part. After what seemed a miniature eternity, the orange dots quickly began to blink out one by one. It was all the brunette could do not to hold her breath in anticipation.

"... Well?"

"One moment captain." Del was still processing, it seemed -- trying to get reliable intel from this far away was taxing even her fairly impressive sensor suite. "... Five EM detonations confirmed, with one unit evidently having shorted out in the attempt. Sensors indicate that the target's engines are spinning down and their radar and sonar are no longer projecting. My conclusion is that phase one was a success."

Cordell couldn't suppress a devious grin and a triumphal fist-pump before practically leaping up from her chair. "Del! Lay in an intercept course with all speed, an' make ready fer boardin' action." She plucked up the elaborate red longcoat that had been draped over the back of the chair and donned it with a deft whirl before retrieving her hat from atop a nearby console, all the while grinning a devilish grin. "Time t' get me some Port Belusia rum."

"As you wish captain."

On the Vaktar cargo boat, Michael's first indication that something had gone wrong would be a series of faint pop-hiss sounds on the boat's outer hull, each shortly followed by the sploosh sound of something vaguely the size and weight of a bowling ball hitting the water. At the same exact time any shipboard lights he could see would suddenly flicker and go out, followed a minute or so later by the engine slowing to a stop and the ship beginning to drift. If there was anyone on the ship's bridge who wasn't asleep or drunk stupid they were likely beginning to panic now as the sudden realization of a ship without power hit them like a ton of bricks.

And then, directly ahead and just above the horizon, a flicker of crimson broke the cloud-scattered sky, like a pinprick just starting to bleed. The object grew larger to the naked eye as it approached, and when it banked the outlines of an airship could clearly be made out... a very distinct airship. The Red Corsair theatrically buzzed over the disabled cargo ship, coming within fifty feet of the ship's deck and veering away in a wash of searing hot thrust at the seeming last moment before looping back and coming to hover in place overhead. A gray hatch on the underside slid open and a figure descended, one foot looped into a drop line to secure her safe ride down. In a seawind-swept cacophony of brass, belts, and scarlet hues Cordell stepped onto the deck with pistol in one hand and cutlass secured at her hip, all sly grins and darting eyes.

Now, where did they keep that rum...?

Michael was quietly enjoying his coffee when the sound of excessive splashing outside drew his attention. He stood up off the edge of his bed, walking over to his small port window to take a quick look outside when the lights suddenly cut off on him. He stumbled, his hand slamming against the wall and his coffee mug shattering as it hit the hardwood. The red emergency lights came on, bathing everything the light from the window did not touch in a deep crimson. Michael took to his scroll, calling the acting captain of the ship.

"What was that?...We lost the engines? What do you mean we lost the engines?!...Then get them up and running! And get the rest of security out there, now!" he said, practically screaming into the scroll at the end. Logically, he knew it was always a possibility. There were structures and procedures in place in case this exact thing happened. But, the likelyhood was so low that Michael had not really considered it until this point. With the crimson light to guide him, he pulled open his locker and took a deep breath.

After a few seconds of silence on the top deck, one of the mechanical doors leading to the bridge was slowly forced open, letting out a long metallic grind. Michael stepped out, his armor shining a bright blue in the sunlight. The thick armor did a lot to keep her from seeing how fast he was breathing. He knew he was supposed to say something, anything really. But, he did not have it in him. There was no way he could do this, not by himself. "Stop." was the only thing he could muster.

"Stop."

Cordell's ears pricked up, first at the sound of someone forcing open a door and then the masculine voice issuing that word. Her expression shifted ever so slightly, going from "kid excited to get her birthday presents" to "slightly sadistic anticipation", just before turning to face her opposition. My, wasn't he something. Cordell looked the giant of a man up and down and gave a playful whistle of appreciation. "Well shiver me timbers if you ain't somethin'. Right surprised you even fit through that doorway, if I'm bein' honest with ya'." She chuckled in amusement. "As to stoppin'..." She lifted her arm and took aim at Michael with her pistol. "Not likely, tiny."

"See, th' way I see it this 'ere tug is dead in th' water. No engines, no guns, an' no way t' call fer help. Now I'm a reasonable sort'a pirate, mate, so I'll be makin' this simple for ya: give me what I came for an' I'll be on me way. Heck, I'll even tell ya how t' get yer onboard generator hummin' again on me way out. An' that's a right generous offer, seein' as th' lot o' ye are Grimm bait right now. Sure, ye can take a swing at me if'n ye got it in ya, an' maybe you and whoever else can scramble out here will even be able t' send me packin'... but that's time'a wastin', mate. Besides which," With her empty hand she hooked a thumb skyward, pointing in the direction of her ship. "Right now, I've got bigger guns. Play nice, an' I'll leave th' ones on yer boat alone. Mess with me, an' if th' Grimm come swimmin' or flyin' over ye'll be fending 'em off without yer artillery pieces. Savvy?"

Michael was quick to pull out his shield, protecting his head from any itchy trigger fingers. With the surprising lack of violence at that point, Michael had the opportunity to get a good feel for the person who just boarded his ship. To say he was surprised would be an understatement. In front of him was a woman, apparently the woman who just disabled his ship, speaking and looking like an old school pirate. With a quick bite to his bottom lip to make sure he was awake, Michael took in the reality of the situation. Thankfully, the absurdity of it quelled his fear for the time being.

"Look, I don't know who you are, I don't know why you're dressed like you're 400 years late for work, and I don't know why you thought it was a good idea to attack this ship. But, you've clearly got a few things wrong. You aren't getting anything from this ship. I am a Vaktar, and we don't make deals with criminals. You have one chance to leave before I get the Atlesian military to hunt you down for violating maritime law. Leave peacefully or in chains." he said, mustering all the courage he had. He had a white-knuckle grip on his shield. If he could keep her talking, he might buy more time for backup to arrive.

Cordell's expression darkened briefly when Michael said the words 'Atlesian military', but only just so. These waters were a bit more northward than she was normally comfortable heading into, but she hadn't done it blindly. A prize like this didn't come along every day, and this far out she had a reasonably solid chance of getting what she was after before any trouble could start.

Well... any trouble besides the mountain in shining armor.

Cordell's smile dropped away as she released her cutlass from its securing clip. "Vaktar, eh? So then, yer one'a th' pompus lot what owns this soggy crate an' th' goodies inside. Good t' know."

"Whilst we be tradin' names an' all, lemme give ya mine. Ye can look it up when ye get t' shore -- t'wouldn't be hard, seein' as I've got bounties on me head from Vacuo t' Mistral. Cordell Ribaldrous Furor the 10th, CAPTAIN o' th' pirate airship Red Corsair, an' I ain't late fer work, mate. I'm right on bloody time."
She cocked back the hammer on her pistol with a satisfying click to emphasize her statement.

"Don't be countin' on no military airships t' swoop in an' save ya -- yer well into inter-kingdom waters here, an' I know fer a fact they don't come out this far unless they receive a distress signal... which you won't be sendin' any time soon. Now, last chance: hand over th' shipment o' Port Belusia an' maybe I won't start blowin' holes in yer fancy-pants ship!"

As it turns out, the woman really loved to hear herself talk. Michael took the opportunity to double-check his gauntlet, jamming the switch on it against the side of his shield. And she kept going, so he looked down at the launcher hidden in his shield. Everything appeared to be in order, and he had his preferred set up as well. Those might just be useful in stalling her ship if he needs to. 'Wait...she's stopped talking.' he said, suddenly pulled from thought by her yelling loudly followed by silence.

Right...he was not paying attention. Taking the first thing he remembered her saying and rolling with it in another attempt to stall, Michael responded with "The tenth? There are nine more of you? Do they all have matching hats?"

Admittedly, it was a stupid comment. But, if the gods are smiling on the youngest Vaktar this day, they will keep him from being shot for a few good seconds.

The gods, as it turned out, had a sense of humor -- Cordell's, however, was wearing a tad bit thin.

At the quip about matching hats, Cordell's expression veered sharply into an agitated scowl and faint hints of a scarlet glow could be seen around the edges of her body. "Ye think this is funny, do ya...?" She subtly flicked two switches on her cutlass, priming it for firing and magnetic grapple. Oh, she would make him take her seriously, even if she had to beat it into him.

A double-shot from her pistol rang out, piercing the steady and serene lapping of waves like a thunderbolt. It was quickly followed by the sharp hiss of compressed air let loose as Cordell shifted, took aim with her cutlass, and squeezed the trigger. The blade lanced forward like it had been launched from a cannon, aimed directly at Michael's shield -- though, honestly, even a hit on the bulkhead behind him would do for what Cordell had in mind next.

The shield is a wonderful thing. It is a wall of protection to keep things like swords and bullets away from sensitive areas such as faces or chest cavities. Michael briefly thanked the heavens for his massive shield before the sword that was launched at him lodged itself on Michael's shield. Seeing only a brief window to act, Michael started launching ice dust at the ground in front of him, covering the area in a thick layer of ice.

As soon as he realized that there was a tether line between the sword and the crazy woman, he felt all of that fear and panic that he conveniently stored away earlier rush back to him. He shifted his attention away from icing the floor and aimed his gauntlet at the tether line in the hopes that it would lose its strength.

Ice -- truth be, she hadn't quite anticipated that. Still, as Cordell hit the switch to pull blade and launcher back together she didn't see that it posed a serious problem. With the blade electromagnetically anchored to Michael's shield she leapt up slightly and let the retraction pull her rapidly across the distance between them, sliding easily as her feet touched the ice. A second volley from her pistol was likely to interrupt his efforts to frost-cut her high-tension line; luckily for her it could withstand quite a bit, even the frigid touch of Dust-ice.

At three feet's distance Cordell cut power to the electromagnet. The blade fell from Michael's shield and whipped back into its launcher, just in time for Cordell to stab it groundward into the ice. Triggering the launcher again gave just enough upward thrust to put her into the air, front-flipping over Michael's head -- this time she'd retracted the blade seconds after firing, allowing her to whip it flail-like right at him as it came back together. Whatever the outcome of that move, she was also quick to kick off the wall just behind Michael... and turn it into an airborne kick aimed at the back of his neck.

Well, plans A, B, and C have failed at this point. There was no way he was gonna get through this tension line. The bullet to the arm dissuaded him from trying any further on the matter. He tried to get his shield up in order to block from getting whipped in the face, but considering that it was aimed to go directly around the shield, it was unavoidable. He heard a click behind him and knew what was coming next.

As a rule of thumb, you always look for obvious weaknesses in your opponents and exploit them to their full potential. With Michael, you would know to try and get around the shield. Another rule of thumb is to know your own weaknesses, and Michael has become quite familiar to the flashy acrobatic kick to the back of the head. Snapping around, he grabbed the foot aimed for his head and heaved forward, using her own momentum to slam her as hard as possible into the deck of the ship.

With a surge of adrenaline making his heart beat at abnormal speeds, Michael quickly went back to his gauntlet. He fired another blast of ice dust at her legs to try and freeze her to the deck.

The world whipped around unexpectedly and then briefly became a thundering ball of pain as Cordell felt the wind knocked out of her by a blow strong enough to make it through her Aura. For a few seconds her vision swam and she had no idea what on Remnant had just happened, so by the time she once again became fully sensate the armored mountain was towering over her spraying ice-Dust at her feet. What's more, her weapons had been knocked just out of reach by the impact. Not. Good.

Fortunately, there was one thing that wasn't out of reach -- her trump card. She coughed, then muttered two words under her breath. "Alrin's Pass."

Overhead, there was an abrupt noise and motion. Maneuvering engines roared to life as the Red Corsair swung around and angled slightly downwards, the long barrel of one of its pulse canons trained directly on Michael. That surely got his attention. "Didn't think I came 'ere alone, did'ja?" Cordell glared defiantly up at the armored man. "I ain't captain fer nothin', big guy. So yer tough, an' ye've seen that one move comin'. Don't matter none -- I still come out on top."

"Lift a finger 'gainst me right now an' me ship's guns'll light ye up like a bloody bonfire." She shuffled so she was leaning slightly upright, propped up on her elbows. "So what we're gonna do is this: yer gonna unstuck me leg right quick, an' then yer gonna go down t' th' cargo hold an'--"

"Captain, I hate to interrupt," The slightly synthetic-sounding voice echoed from a sewn-in communicator tucked into the fabric of Cordell's collar. "But we have a problem. My sensors are tracking multiple signatures approaching the cargo ship from underwater, and all indications suggest that they are Grimm."

Cordell froze for half a second, then cursed loudly. "So much fer a quick smash'n grab. Oi, tiny! This ain't no game anymore -- like I said, Grimm bait! Ye wanna live? How about everyone else on this tug? Yer gonna need me help. Let's settle questions'a cargo after we avoid dyin' from sea monsters, eh?"

Michael sighed, hanging his head in annoyance. "Of course it was gonna bring the grimm! You turned off the ship with dozens of people on it!" he said, his temper not helped by the massive gun pointed at him. Holding his gauntleted hand to his face and only smacking himself a little bit with the metal palm, he thought of what to do next. Letting the pirate go means he will certainly end up being shot today, but keeping the pirate there means that he will probably be grimm food barring being shot anyway.

After a brief second taken to breathe, Michael pulled the bolt up on his gauntlet. He moved it forward with a satisfying clunk as he switched chambers. "You are seriously lucky that you had me on security." he said, taking aim at her with the gauntlet. He hesitated for a brief second, aimed square at her head before dropping to her legs. "Nobody else would be this stupid."

He let off a small stream of fire dust, melting the ice that encased her legs. If this ends up with him getting killed, it would be better off than letting the rest of the crew fall to the grimm. "And if you have any dignity in you, you'll shoot me from the front next time."

" 'Dignity' ain't somethin' ye can eat, mate." As the ice melted away Cordell jimmied her leg back and forth until finally it came free, standing and dusting herself off before readjusting her hat. "Or sleep under, or stay warm by. Ain't everybody got th' option t' be born with a silver spoon, Vaktar, so kindly don't begrudge me life choices. Besides, is takin' from those who's got more'n they could ever need really a crime?" She grinned devilishly at him, still clearly in a jousting mood -- if only verbally at the moment.

"Fer th' record, one thing I don't do is kill people -- or leave 'em t' die, if given a choice in th' matter. Don't go spreadin' that 'round, though." She stretched, arching her back with her hands on her hips, and the faint popping of joints could be heard. "Ye gawds, that one hellova backswing. Right -- not dyin'. Del, what're we up against?"

"Numbers are difficult to ascertain -- the creatures seem to be approaching together as a pack. However, based on rate of speed and movement patterns I ascertain a high likelihood that the approaching Grimm are of the 'Breacher' variety. Estimated time of arrival: twelve minutes."

"Goddamn stingrays, huh? Just great..." Cordell sighed, exasperated. "Okay... okay, we can do this." Picking up her weapons and tucking them away, Cordell began to pace back and forth thoughtfully. "I hate t' undo me own handiwork, but we've no choice but t' get this crate back up an' runnin'. Okay... we're on a Vaktar Type 22-C so the air ducts should be juuuuust big enough. Del, I need 4E and 7E, 2M, 1H and... ah hell, send down U3 fer good measure. The Es can patch up the main lines an' tie 'em into th' emergency generator. 2M'll do a bypass on th' -- wait, scratch that, a chip swap an' hard reset for the starboard capacitor. 1H an' U3 can reboot weapons -- make bloody sure they remember t' change the IFF an' CID protocols first so ye' don't get shot outta th' sky. Speakin' of, belay targetin' order an' position t' shoot up th' incomin' beasties instead: cannons on water, harpoon fer hull support." She quickly checked the ammo count of the pistol she'd fired at Michael and began casually reloading it as she turned towards him.

"Short version: me robots is gonna start patchin' yer ship up an' th' Red Corsair'll provide covering fire. We gotta deal with anything that climbs up onto deck. Dunno if you've fought Breachers before, but lucky you th' reinforced hull o' this cargo ship is tough as nails... otherwise, ye'd see how they earned th' name, first-hand." As she spoke another drop line descended from the Red Corsair, this one with several small round-bodied robots clinging to it and chattering excitedly to one another. "An' if we survive this... well, what say I'll owe ye a proper drink. Any questions, mate?"

GRIMM TYPE: Breacher
SUMMARY: These aquatic Grimm are predators of opportunity, known primarily for their ability to leap a dozen feet or more out of the water and gore the hulls of passing ships with their bull-like horns. They range in size from 3-4 ft long (horns to tail) for juveniles and 7-8 ft when fully mature, though like most Grimm stories of much larger and more dangerous "Alpha" Breachers are not unheard of. Their favored tactic is to knock or drag their victims into the water, as few if any are a match for a Breacher while trying not to drown; barring that, Breachers will slither snake-like and lash out with their barbed tails, bladed fin-tips, and occasionally even launch spikes from their tails as projectiles. They have been known to stubbornly climb the hulls of ships too strong to smash and too tall to leap, anchoring themselves by wetly slapping their rubbery fins down flat to achieve suction. It's not terribly fast but it nonetheless works, and it can be hazardous to lean over the rail and try and shoot at them off.

While he could think of all manner of things to say to this arrogant, pompous miscreant, there were more important things at hand. Namely, not being dragged off the ship in giant metal armor. Because taking a dip in the ocean while basically wearing an anchor is a good way to see what is on the ocean floor expediently. While she got her bots ready, he called down to the man in charge of the ship.

"Cortez! Status report!" he said loudly and clearly into his scroll.

"Sir, we're trying to get the problems sorted out. Everythign is still offline."

"Damn. We've got a situation. Get everyone you can to the security team and hold up there. We're gonna be getting hit with some grimm soon."

"Oh...Yes, sir."

Taking a deep breath, Michael put away his scroll. Grimm and pirates, what a fantastic day this was turning out to be. He quickly swapped the canisters on his back, giving his gauntlet a quick test fire to make sure there were any connection problems. "I've got a lot of questions. Those can wait for later. I'll freeze. You shoot. Sound good?" he said, loading grenades into the launcher on his shield. It did not seem that he would really need to block much in this one.
