Seeking The Truth
by Atom Music Audio

How had this happened? Everything, everything, from that fateful day onward, had been done to avoid this...

Gripping the flight controls with desperate urgency, Captain Cordell of the pirate airship Red Corsair willed her ship and herself to maneuver faster and more deftly than she'd ever done before. The stress of constantly shifting momentum would have battered her senseless against the cockpit had Delahaye not deployed a safety harness upon the first reckless maneuver Cordell had performed... and she was now somewhere between her fifth and her twelfth, having well and truly failed to keep track as her heartbeat thundered in her ears. Yet the enemy was keeping up, move for move... and an abrupt shower of sparks and warning klaxon going off suggested they might even have the upper hand.

"Starboard fuel injection system has been hit." Delahaye's computer-generated voice was perhaps the only calm and collected thing in the cockpit right now, standing in stark contrast to the ill-tidings she bore. "Ring circulation compromised. Main engine efficiency dropping to 85%."

'Damn it all!' Cordell thought, sweat mingling with blood on her forehead. The enemy had come seemingly out of nowhere, their sensor baffling leaving the Red Corsair blind until the first shots struck -- a complete surprise attack, and one that included a nasty collision with a bulkhead for the young pirate. She'd been too bold, too careless, especially to come this far north over open waters. Now it seemed painfully obvious that the rumors she'd been chasing down about illegal shipments of military-grade hardware from Atlas had been nothing but a trap from the start.

Well, not entirely untrue. There was, after all, that other airship. The one keeping up with every twist and turn she made, tracking every tight zig-zag and calling the bluff on every feint. The one that looked almost exactly like hers -- a cobalt-blue and smoke-gray painted devil straight out of hell. She knew Atlas still had old V-21 Arrowheads mothballed in storage, sure, and it wasn't impossible that the military could have upgraded them to the level pursued by Project Thunderbolt. What she was looking at through the rear cameras was entirely possible... but it was also entirely wrong. The other airship had no military markings, in fact it had no markings whatsoever. There had been no call with a demand to surrender; Cordell knew Atlas military protocol, and her attacker was not following it.

This was why her father had stolen the prototype and destroyed the plans. This was why she'd never stopped poking about in the black market to see who would have wanted it in the first place. This -- a swift, potent combat airship potentially ending up in the wrong hands. Apparently it had all been for nothing.

They hadn't prevented it. They'd just given it a target.

"Del, is there anyone else in local airspace? Anyone? Even a gods-thrice-damned Atlas patrol?" She quickly keyed up the manual shut-off to the damaged connections and routed in the emergency backups, one hand dancing across buttons and flip-switches while her other jerked the flight stick hard left.

"One. A cargo carrier, ten clicks out. Scans indicate they may possess moderate-to-heavy armaments."

"It'll have t' do. Lock in their coordinates an' send out th' following distress signal on auto-loop." He paused for a moment, focusing to pull the Red Corsair into a steep climb as she hit the under-slung wing thrusters at full tilt. "Whomever's receivin' this -- this is Captain Cordell o' th' Red Corsair. I've come under fire from an unidentified airship an' sustained significant damage. Help get this bastard off'a me an' there's fifteen crates o' industrial-grade Dust in it fer ya, no questions asked. FIFTEEN. CRATES. Onboard me ship, goin' down with me if'n this backstabber gets their way." Despite whipping into a corkscrew and diving hard left, the Red Corsair took another hit from the enemy ship's guns, causing the Red Corsair to shudder from the impact and Cordell to lurch forward against her harness with a pained grunt. "Damn iiiiit!"

Turning in the direction of the cargo ship, the pirate switched off several safeties and accelerated for all her ship was worth. Gauges spiked, needles shot into the orange and teetered on the brink of red. She knew her ship could take this, even in its damaged state... but not for long. If this didn't pay off then she'd risk burning out the fuel cells and induction coils -- the Red Corsair could literally overload and go dark, plunging into the churning, frosty waters below.

It was time to roll the dice...

The communications officer had his fingers cradling his headphones, his focus completely on the message their ship was receiving. He sucked in his lips and lifted one cup off his ear. "Captain, we're receiving a request for aid."

"Send it over the speakers."

"Yes sir." The communications officer tampered with his station until the message came through.

"-is Captain Cordell o' th' Red Corsair. I've come under fire from an unidentified airship an' sustained significant damage. Help get this bastard off'a me an' there's fifteen crates o' industrial-grade Dust in it fer ya, no questions asked. FIFTEEN. CRATES. Onboard me ship, goin' down with me if'n this backstabber gets their way." The communications officer cut it off before the message could repeat itself.

"What do you think, Captain?" The communications officer asked.

Jackson sighed. He retreated from the window and settled back into his seat. He interlocked his fingers. "A backstabbing? Sounds like it's just pirates having a squabble, no?"

"Block communications, sir?"

A moment of silence filled the bridge; the only things to be heard were the various blooping and bleeping of the various stations scattered about. "Set course to intercept. Everyone to combat stations."

"Yes sir!" the pilot, navigator, and communications officer said in unison before immediately beginning their tasks.

The chief officer shot out of his seat. "Sir, we shouldn't be putting ourselves at risk for pirates. Even if you consider the reward, trusting a pirate is a fool's errand."

Jackson scowled. "Do you not believe the crew of this ship to take down a measly pirate, officer? I'm well aware of the risk so sit down and get to work. Oh, and don't you dare call me a fool. He turned his attention back to the communications officer. "Barry, put Jasper on my line." Barry nodded. After tapping his console a few times, he gave Jackson a thumbs up.

Jackson picked up the phone. On the other end of the line was a woman. "You're expectations of me are too high, Jackson," she said.

"You don't have it figured out yet?"

"Of course I do. I just wish you'd lower your standards. Anyway, it's an Atlas design. V-21 Arrowhead. Unveiled a few years back. Oh, and it's both of them, by the way. Not just the, ahem, aggressor."

"What is Atlas doing? Do they need to higher babysitters for their ships?" Jackson said as he placed a hand on his forehead. "I'm throwing you back over to Barry. You know what to do." He tapped on his console a few times and the chief engineer was off the line. "Oh and Barry, connect me with the enemy ship."

His phone lit up and he picked it up once more. "This is the captain of CRG two-one-two. Desist or we will engage. I repeat. This is the captain of CRG two-one-two. Desist or we will engage. Over." He muted himself and said out loud to the crew, "Proceed with warning shots. If they haven't back off once we enter combat range, you are free to engage."

For several long moments Jackson's ultimatum was met only with silence, a slight crackle of static being the chief confirmation that the comm line was in fact open. Then, just when it seemed no response was coming, a badly distorted and re-rendered voice came across. "This doesn't concern you. Stay out of our affairs and you won't get hurt." With that, the channel was cut.

The Red Corsair ans its pursuer continued to close, continuing to pull maneuvers to stay ahead of each other as they did. There was one noticeable difference following the captain's message, however: the attacking ship, until now only firing it's energy cannons in tightly controlled bursts, became more aggressive in its bid to take the pirate down. What they gained in rate of fire they lost in accuracy -- those shots which did hit were mostly glancing blows skimming across the hull, with only a comparative few landing direct strikes on the Red Corsair's rearward systems. Despite their big talk, the attacking Arrowhead seemed increasingly eager to end their chase before the CRG 212 could bring its guns to bear, and it was making them sloppy.

As the first warning shots came the Red Corsair, in a moment of daring reckless, banked hard towards them, only boosting away from the munitions at the last second -- a clear message from Cordell that she was willing to maximize the fire support from her impromptu ally for all it was worth. That seemed to give the attacking ship second thoughts; peeling away briefly, their attempt to re-engage came up short as the added distance allowed Cordell to whip her ship around and bring her own guns to bear for the first time since the engagement began. Trading fire as they darted and wove, the two Arrowheads moved closer and closer to the cargo ship's effective range. It made for quite the spectacle for Jackson's bridge crew to behold, each of the nimble combatants tracing ribbons of cyan light from their engines as they danced in deadly spins and pirouettes.

Just before it would have crossed over into CRG 212's combat range, the attacking airship abruptly banked hard left and boosted away, dodging retaliatory fire from the Red Corsair as it went. The ship's instruments would detect a long range transmission from the fleeing ship as it left, but the signal would sound like randomized noise.

Even breathing heavily from the exertion and g-forces she'd endured, Cordell managed a sigh of relief as she watched the other ship become a speck in the distance. That had been far too close. Even just a glance at her instrumentation made it perfectly clear that several systems had been compromised and the hull was likely pockmarked with holes, and that wasn't even a proper status check. She was alive, at least, and her ship, though battered, was in one piece and still sky-worthy. Taking a moment to catch her breath, she throttled back the engines to a nominal speed before switching on the comms.

"Red Corsair t'," She quickly checked the cargo ship's public IFF. "CRG two-one-two, thanks for th' assist. Ye really saved me bacon back there. Sorry t' get ye messed up in all that; th' blighter straight-up ambushed me an' I couldn't shake 'em till you stepped in. Godsdamned nightmare, that."

Jackson's be lying if he said he wasn't just a little disappointed that the enemy airship turned tail so quickly and easily. Still, it meant that his crew remained unharmed and that they didn't have to expend any money for using munitions.

Jackson released himself from his seat and made his way toward the window where he'd been prior to this little incident. "Barry, withdraw orders". The energy that had once overwhelmed the bridge dissipated as soon as the order dropped.

"Yes, sir. Oh, and we're receiving comms from the Red Corsair. Patching it through," Barry said before fulfilling the orders just given to him. Cordell's message filled the bridge.

"It's not everyday that you come across a dog fight out here over these waters, even if it was a bit...one-sided. Still, those maneuvers you pulled off? Color me impressed, Miss...Cordell". He gestured toward the pilot. Jackson had gotten his attention, his place his palms parallel to each other. The pilot nodded and the ship began to churn. "Will you be able to make it back to port?"

Cordell gave a weak smile. "Would'a been even more one-sided if'n ye hadn't stepped in. Looks like they were targetin' me engines an' fuelin' systems -- an' knew just where t' hit me, at that. I'd probably be in th' water right about now if not fer those shots ye fired."

She quickly glanced across a few different panels, checking her status somewhat more closely than she had before. "I think I can get patched up well enough t' limp back t' th' northern coast, as long as there's no more surprises 'twixt here an' there. If ye be headed that way, mind if I stick close 'till we're over land? I don't much fancy gettin' shot up again, truth be told."

"Now, I owe ye some Dust, don't I?" Cordell leaned back slightly in her chair. "I'm a pirate an' all, so it's fair if'n ye don't trust me t' dock with ye. I can drop-line th' crates if ye'v got th' means t' receive 'em, or drop 'em off for holdin' at any o' a dozen ports-a-call. I'm a scoundrel what honors her debts, an' I owe ye proper fer today, mate."

"Ay ay, Cordell. We be happy to escort ye back to the coast," Jackson said. The bridge became silent. He glanced around and found that he was facing blank stares from everyone, and when he finally met eyes with someone, everyone immediately went back to work. Jackson didn't encounter pirates with such heavy accents often at all, and the quality of his 'pirate talk' showed for it. He returned to the task at hand.

"As for retrieving the cargo, if you think you can land safely upon our deck, we have a service hatch that we can use for the exchange. If not, that we can pick up a drop-off after you've made repairs to your ship."

Cordell glanced away, eyes scanning a side-screen showing data on the CRG 212. "Should be able't, yeah. And I greatly appreciate th' escort. See you in a few."

Ending the transmission, Cordell plotted an approach trajectory that would put her ship down close to the hatch then set to work continuing to stabilize her ship's wounded systems. Trailing smoke from some of its wounds, the Red Corsair swung around to fly mostly parallel with the large cargo ship while gradually moving into place. As the pirate ship touched down the magnetic clamps secured it to the outer hull; a few minutes later the main walkway slid down and Cordell, looking only slightly worse for wear, escorted the first set of crates down the ramp on a loading trolley.

This had been a near thing, and the damage to her ship clearly showed as much. Del and the Gears would do what they could but she could already guess that several systems would need an overhaul before the Red Corsair would be back at its best. When she spotted the CRG's crew she gave a short wave, gesturing to the crates. "Feel free t' have a look -- everything's on th' up-an'-up. Least I can do fer you folks after all that."

Jackson wasn't sure what he was expecting, but upon laying eyes on Cordell for the first time, he wasn't surprised in the slightest. He glanced over to one of the crew members beside him and nodded. The crewman returned the gesture and went on to inspect the crates.

He walked up toward the pirate, leaving behind a red-haired, cross-armed woman, and extended his hand. "We're glad to have helped, Captain Cordell. I'm the captain of this ship.
 You can call me Jackson
" Jackson said. "It may not be in my place to ask, but what was going on there exactly. Just an everyday pirate skirmish?" Judging by the tone of the enemy's voice, he knew it had to be something more than that, but going that deep would be like smashing the doorknob off of a door when a sturdy paperclip would have sufficed. But then he realized he had to consider the future safety of his crew and the organization so he grabbed the hammer and smashed away. "I suppose what I'm asking is: Will this incident cause any trouble for us in the future?"

"That's..." Cordell, after shaking Jackson's hand and hearing his question, paused in thought. She sighed. "... A fair question, t' be honest. I can't say much, not with real certainty at any rate, but I'll tell ye this -- that wasn't a common scuffle." She paused again, as if debating with herself how much to say and to what extent she ought trust the man who'd effectively saved her life. When she spoke again her voice had dropped slightly towards a whisper.

"Surely comes as no surprise, me ship ain't exactly legal. If'n ye looked it up it's Atlas tech -- not terribly old but not cuttin' edge anymore neither. Still, I'm sure ye know Atlas ain't th' sort t' put their arsenal up for market. I can't go into specifics, really, but th' Red Corsair was modified before she came into me ownership, an' there shouldn't be another of her like. The effort was... shut down, let's just say. At least, that's what I'd assumed . . . clearly, today's gone an' proved me wrong."

"Wish I had a clearer answer for ye, but I've no real idea on th' who or how. All I know is th' why -- they want me an' me ship cuz'a what I know, that much I'm fairly certain of. Whether they'll come after you now... ah, that I can't rightly say."
There was just a hint of shame in her expression; the thought that others might pay a price for being associated with her clearly wasn't something Cordell was at all comfortable with. "Captain Jackson, I... I really am sorry t' have gotten ye mixed up in this."

Jackson crossed one arm across his chest, his other hand tapping at his chin. He nodded as Cordell told him what she knew.

"No need to apologize, Captain. We had an idea of what we might be getting into, some more than others," Jackson said as he shot a glance toward the bridge where the chief officer remained. Despite the officer's objections to helping Cordell, Jackson knew it was in good faith and that without him, there would be nothing to counterbalance Jackson's occasional recklessness. "Besides, if they try something with us," Jackson moved his hand away from his face, formed a fist, and sent it into the palm of the other, "we won't let them escape so easily next time."

Cordell visibly perked up at Jackson's declaration, letting the hint of a grin play across her face. "Aye, I've not a doubt of that. Ye'v got some seriously nice armaments fer a cargo hauler -- hate t' be th' Grimm what falls into yer crosshairs, that's for certain!" She gave a short chuckle. Seriously, though, this ship did seem very well armed from what she could tell, the engineering side of her very much wanting to get a closer look at every gun and cannon for sake of appeasing her curiosity. Whoever was funding Jackson's command was clearly rather well off.

"Still, ye saw th' speed o' both ships -- it's one'a th' Red Corsair's main strengths, an' saved me in more than just one pinch." She was still hesitant to reveal too much about her own vessel, but given how far from land they still were it might improve their odds of survival to give Jackson some usable info. "Chances are good they've got th' same stealth systems as me, too. Rapid hit-an'-run, that's what we can expect if they've th' stones t' come back..." She suddenly looked at him with exceptional seriousness. "I need yer word, captain t' captain, that we can trust each other. If so . . . I'll give ye th' stealth data on me ship. Once ye know what t' look for it'll take away their advantage o' surprise an' improve yer weapons' tracking on 'em." She offered her hand. "Just promise ye won't use it against me, savvy?"

"You can never be too careful when you're this far out from the mainlands. One bad encounter, be it Grimm or pirate, and we'd be in the bellies of those monstrous Grimm lurking beneath the waves". Jackson pointed a thumb to the edge of the ship.

As the conversation shifted back to Cordell's ship, the seriousness of the pirate captain spoke volumes; Jackson returned the same tone to her. "I understand that this information can put you and your ship in jeopardy, and thank you for trusting us with it." Jackson reached out and accepted the handshake. "With that being said, the info would be useless with me. It would be better if you spoke to our Systems Officer and Chief Engineer. Keep it on a need-to-know basis". Jackson released himself from her grip, his hand following up with a radio. "Barry, send Jasper and Terrence into the conference room. I'll be there shortly". Barry acknowledged the order and the radio went silent. Jackson turned back to Cordell. "Allow me to invite you inside, Captain. And you guys [the crew handling the newly-acquired cargo], don't forget to close the door".

An invitation inside? Cordell was both impressed and surprised -- impressed at just how gracious her host was, and surprised that he'd invite a known scoundrel aboard. She wasn't used to being asked to come aboard cargo ships, after all. Of course, there was a part of her that was wary of a trap... but she and Jackson were already in much the same boat metaphorically, so making it literal certainly wasn't a huge step. "Guess we be takin' this trust thing seriously then. All righty." She unclipped her cutlass from her belt and offered it to her fellow captain, followed by her pistols -- a gesture of good faith, as she doubted he was so trusting as to let her aboard armed. "I'll be on me best behavior, ye have me word. Dun be surprised if I gawk an' stare a tad at th' fancier bits o' yer vessel -- good engineerin' has a way o' catchin' me eye an' admiration."

Letting Jackson take the lead, Cordell fell into step behind him. What curious bedfellows an emergency above the high seas could make...

Given the background of him and his crew, Jackson felt that the gesture was fairly unnecessary but accepted it anyway with a smile.

"Gawk all you want then! Our CE would love that."

He hung onto the weapons as best he could--two pistols and a sword were a little much to carry by himself--as they made their way through the ships cold, metallic, well-lit hallways that seemed to thunder with every step that Jackson took.

Eventually they came upon the meeting room. He swung open the thick door to reveal its innards. It was fairly ordinary. A rectangular metal table lay in the middle with enough chairs to seat eight people. On the wall closest to the farthest end was a projector screen, one corner was dedicated to media players for the projector, and on the wall opposite of that connected to the hallway was a whiteboard which was unused at the moment. Two people were already in the room: an average-looking, tan-skinned brunette whose outfit would've been fit for business if not for the fact that she removed her jacket and rolled up her sleeves and a grizzled, fair-skinned, black-haired man whose outfit matched military more than anything else.

They both stood up and walked toward the two. The woman introduced herself first with a hand extended.

"Glad to see that you've come out unscathed, Captain Cordell," she said. Jackson introduced her as Jasper, the Chief Engineer.

The man shot a glance at Jasper before greeting her as well. "A little weird to say given her occupation, but likewise." Jackson introduced him as Forrest, Combat Systems Officer.
